Childers is a tiny little place - where everyone knows my name! They honestly do, myself, Emma and Annie got so pissed on many occasions that all the locals from Federal (the only cool place to drink there and the Grand Palace Hotel) Bar knew us it was a happy town. It consisted of one Woolworths, 3 bars (Fed was the best one it had a beer garden and did THE best fish and chips ever), Chinese restaurant (looked skanky outside and inside but tasted goood), 1 Vietnamese restaurant, a post office, a tiny little fire station and lots of little cafes. It looked like something from the 1950s - see pics on facebook. We stayed at Childers Campsite/Backpackers, I really liked it there. Me and Emma had a room together - when I say room I men greenhouse! There was a lovely looking pool I never went in it though as the water was freezing - apparently, wouldn't know I didn't even attempt to dip my toe in it! We had lots of good times here and made some good friends we had BBQs, many drunken goon filled days, lots of drinking games, we went to a winery which was a gorgeous day out! Apart from all that I mainly topped up my tan as it was glorious sunshine pretty much ever day.
Day 1 of zucchini was hard. I had one day off, and straight back into it, I struggled, and it was hard, painful and just not fun!! However as the week went on I got used to it. But looking around this gigantic field - It took 30 mins to walk just to get to the middle of the field so gives you an idea how big it was - there was an awful lot of fruit to pick and only 3 of us doing it I had a feeling it was going to work out. And it didn't, couple of weeks later Jake (the hot boss) took in new pickers who were paid by what they pick. The were Nepalese and they moved sooo fast! They were really good, there were now about 8 of us working planting seeds and pulling out weeds…one by one Jake was getting rid of them - and not in a nice way he would tell them day off and then not get them back!! We had a feeling it was going to happen to us, one night we asked Jake what was going on and he told us "there are heaps of plants up here dead cause they weren't planted properly" and completely dismissed our question. We quit we were fed up hearing stories from other people about what he was doing and I was not enjoying myself!
We had some fun times on this farm…one of them being the 1st day Annie joined us and just as Jake disappeared to Bundaberg to drop off crates of fruit the heavens opened and there we were standing in the middle of the field which had flooded within 5 mins, soaked through to our undies. Jake kindly took us back to the greenhouse to change into dry clothes and go back to work for a further 2 soakings…thanks again for that Jake!
We would also have throwing competitions to see who could throw the zucchinis the furthest and different kinds of throws and then there was the day that Emma broke the tractor seat! I wish I had seen this but I was too busy taking my eye out by pulling the weeds out the ground. Emma went on and 5 minutes later came over to join me, she informed me as soon as the tractor started moving the seat fell off…we called her fat ass for the rest of the day She is anything but - the tractor was extremely rusty and the seat was going to fall off any day, it just so happened that it was Emma's turn teehee!!
So we both quit, got our bus to Brisbane, met up with Jill, Sarah and Claire and also met up with Gemma again who had arrived back the same day as us - she went home for her mates wedding. We enjoyed drinks, shopping; I bought another new phone as I broke my last one - shock huh? We went to Nandos, visited the Plough (our favourite place!) and then I changed my flight to a month earlier and flew to Perth!!
