Myself and Emma (who was also extremely hung-over) managed to get our 100kilo suitcases on to the bus without being caught by the driver and we were off!! It was a pretty uneventful journey apart from my cocktail mix coming up to say hello…that was all that happened. Arrived at dark o clock in Bundaberg…got picked up and taken to our hostel!! Pleasantly surprised as we arrived it looked decent. And then we got inside.
I'll never in my life stay in such a s***hole - I would honestly have rather slept in the gutter but there was the chance of being killed by the lunatics that lived in Bundaberg and so I stayed put in CELLBLOCK - NEVER EVER STAY THERE! EVER!!
The receptionist was guttered, we were shown half arsed around the hostel; this I didn't care about all I wanted to do was sleep but no there was a raging party on for someone's leaving do! Fantastic. Eventually got to our "room" and I thought I was going to cry having left a gorgeous cheap apartment to this was a bit of a shock. 5 star resort - my arse! I was then told I would be working the following morning and to be ready by 5.20am to leave for the tomato packing shed...whaey! Once in the room and half settled in. The walls were plain white. There were bars on the windows from the original Cell, the floor was concrete and their were dead cocoons on the wall. A true delight. Not what I expected for $167 a week not to mention the $6 transport fee and $4 per sheet to get clean ones!! This is a working hostel and we had to PAY to get clean sheets…anyhoo! Well that night I got about 3 hours sleep and off I went to begin my 12 hour shift. And what a shift it was.
It was began by letting the guy know we were up and ready we were then giving the keys to van and had to drive ourselves there. The 1st morning we were told the van may not start so just "tap this black box 3 times" and it will come on. And like magic it did!! Shame there was no lights though. Another day there was 10 of us squashed into a wagon piece of junk - 4 of us were in the boot…it was fun and a little adventure.
By day 4 I was wrecked, 12 hours every day, 1 hour break, and 3 hours sleep at night was doing me no good! Eventually by day 6 Emma text me to say we can start the zucchini work - hooray I thought!! So the following day we set off for Childers - about 45 mins from Bundaberg.
I never got to see Bundaberg in daylight - it was dark when I left the hostel and it was dark when I left work…it was a very joyus time! I seen it briefly on the Saturday morning and what an absoloute dump! Never…ever…visit this place!
