Hey folks!
As you may know, we were headed to Palenque from San Cristobal. The bus journey was about 5 to 6 hours and we set off at 11am, so arrived in Palenque early evening. We got advised (again from Adam and Rick!) to go stay in the jungle resort El Pan Chan, so we didnt hesitate to head there, and check in at the jungle palace dorm rooms. The resort was really close to the ruins, and had a few places to stay and a few places to eat and drink too, so it was quite convienient ,and cheap too.. which was what we liked ;) lol
Soon after we got shown to our room, an Australian girl called Lou turned up with her backpack to stay the one night with us in the dorm room. She was heading to the ruins in the morning, so we made plans to get up with her, and get a guide around the ruins, which made it cheaper for us all, so we knew the purpuse of the amazingly architectured structures, and found out some of the history behind them too!
We also met a guy called Jared from California, who had cycled down with his band mates on specially designed bikes that when put on a kick stand and cycled, could generate the power to run the instruments and amps etc for them to gig around Mexico! They were called the Ginger Ninja's, and that night were playing at the Maya bella down the road from El Pan Chan, so Ben and Alex had just about enough energy left to walk down to check them out, only to find out they were too late, and caught the last 5mins!! They enjoyed the 30 mins walk each way though:S lol
On our third day we were to go to the Agua Azul on a tour through jungle palace where we were staying, we dont actually know what we were paying the 150 pesos for because when we went to get in the shuttle bus, we got charged another 40pesos for transport!? Also the water wasnt very 'Azul' either (blue!) lol but there were some great waterfalls, it was really picturesque, and the weather was great too!
It was a fair trek to the very top where we had been told was ok to swim in, but we got there in the end, with only Al n Alex in there shorts ready for some action! Immediately spotting a huge tree bent right out into the water with about 20ft drop! We got some great vids of branches snapping, (dont think they could take Al's weight) and flips off the top from Alex too! We like to invent new extreme sports however possible! lol
When we got back to the jungle, there wasnt really too much to do, although we had bumped into a guy called Ryan who we met in Puerto and played footy with on the beach, and also met an older couple of people called Shannen n Karren, who had met in tulum and basically gave each other a reason not to head home and so came to Palenque together after hooking up! They were kinda crazy really! but full of great advice too so we took that on board whenever possible.
Some of the advice was to fly from Cancun instead of Merida, where Ryan n Al were going to head to, as they were leaving that night to go to LA a day early before Alex and Ben. Aparantly it would work out cheaper, but you dont find out until you turn up i guess!? lol
With one more day and night left in Palenque, Alex and Ben watched the live action in the most popular part of the resort which was the italian and mexican restuarant Don Mucho's.. they have bands playing music every night and a fire act with a few different people and loads of bongo's and drums beating throughout just to add to the intensity! It was probably more impressive after a few drinks though! haha
The next day was just a chillout day so we went into Palenque, but there wasnt much to see. So we grabbed some food from the super market for the journey to Tulum, and had a fairwell meal at Don Mucho's before heading to the bus station and preparing to spend the next day in what may be described as paradise by some!
Stay tuned friends and family! x
