Not far along from Johanna Beach is the town of Princetown and as we approached this part of the coast things started to look familiar. For those who don't understand, Adam (my brother) and I worked in the next town along, Port Campbell and were staying at a little B&B style park near Princetown. I was keen to see this area again as it was about 10yrs since we were last here.
Arriving at the Twelve Apostles in fairly blowy conditions and amongst quite a crowd of fellow tourists (a lot of overseas countries represented) we were both pretty keen to get out and have a look around. After a quick stop at the toilets which left Kylz wondering WTF (you will have to ask her) we were ready to go. The path leads past the visitors centre and under the main road and out onto a boardwalk and path system that ensures an awesome view of the amazing rock pillars. The pictures tell the story and the ones we managed to take while the sun was shining are the standout shots. We used to drive past these stone giants every day on our way to work and hardly give it a second glance! It's nice to have time to have a real good look around. That probably goes for all the places we have seen this year!
Along this second stage of the GOR we took in as many of the natural wonders as we could. Loch Ard Gorge, The Arch and London Bridge are all in our photos. We also did a lap through Port Campbell and got a glimpse of the local Pub which was almost a second home for Adam, myself and our drilling crew for a few months. The lunch stop for the day saw us pull into Peterborough and let the girls loose on yet another playground. We had been told about the Peterborough Bear and were puzzled as to what it really was. Turns out it is a rock formation just off shore and like much of the coast has seen its fair share of ships wrecked around it. See if you can spot it as well!?
The Bay of Martyrs and the Bay of Islands on the Western end of the GOR saw the sun shine and the rain pour, almost at the same time. This contrast also gave us some very good photo opportunities. Huge wind farms, were also a standout amongst the flat and very green paddocks of the many dairy farms you see around Warrnambool. The weather had not managed to clear and the forecast was pretty grim as we fuelled up in Warrnambool and stocked up on anti-freeze.......for the Pepsi-Max of course. Our next stop was also a free one and located out of Port Fairy near the mouth of the Fitzroy River.
Arriving we found our friends from the previous stop, Phil and Deb already there. After setting up we were also joined by another couple who were at our last stop, Graeme and Trudy. While swapping yarns of the days travels we got a fire going and were settling in to try and fight off the cold when the rain returned and spoiled the party for all. After discussing the fact that you cannot carry fruit and vege into SA we realised we had been caught off guard and had a fridge full of stuff to get rid of. We decided on an extra nights stay to cook some of our food so we would not be forced to waste it.
While Kylz started an evening meal the cold finally got to her and I was forced outside to fire up the generator. Now this was no problem until Kylz managed to overload it one more time and it actually conked out. Being dark now I was not keen on going outside and was also slightly worried as to why it had died altogether. Out in the rain, the dark and the freezing cold the white flag was raised pretty quick and Kylz was told to harden up a bit as I retreated inside. I was disappointed as I had become fond of my little "homebrand" Honda gennie. The next day, after a night of howling wind and heavy rain, after a bit of mucking around (small engine style) and using all my limited knowledge we were back in business. Pheww! Kylz appreciated the heater running while she was inside cooking all day to use up our overload of fruit and vege.
Our camp area had open grass sites and a very clean "long drop" toilet block. The day turned very sour and we were all stuck inside for much of it. The girls to their credit were well behaved and spent the day doing all the usual inside things kids do. Graeme attempted to get a fire going in the afternoon to cook a roast but just as it seemed he might be in the clear and we had all made a drink to help him out, the rain came down in buckets! Another night of pouring rain and we were sure we would be on the road in the morning. No sense sticking around here.
Our packing up started early and with a bit of entertainment, as Kylz was on her way for an early morning toilet run, when she was forced into a hasty retreat by a sudden light hail storm! The look on her face as the caravan door slammed open and she tried to get inside with her umbrella turned inside out by the wind, made Chelsea and I nearly choke on our porridge! After recovering from that we packed ourselves together and said goodbye to our new friends and set off to cross another border. Still battling terrible weather that did not seem to be ending, we really had no idea as to our exact destination for the night. Not a real big problem for us though aye!?
