We had been told several times (when we got to Lakes Entrance) to stay at Eastern Beach Caravan Park, so this is where we pulled up for the next 4 nights. We had been taking our time getting here due to the Easter long weekend. I will say no wonder we were told to stay here. Only a 30 minute walk into the main centre of town and a 5 minute walk (if that) to Ninety Mile Beach.
The manager was also a top bloke and was always helpful and up for a yarn. Turns out he and his wife are busy filling in around the place as managers and have plenty of work on their radar. It makes a big difference when a place has the right managers and Gary and his wife are two of the best we have met. A couple from Bundaberg, Des and Carmel, were also camped next to us and naturally James and Des (after a bit of a yarn) knew a few of the same people. Des and Carmel gave us some good advice and feedback on a few of our upcoming destinations.
We decided to take a bike ride into town, this was a very easy ride (we are definitely not training for the Tour de France on this trip!!) along the waterfront, with plenty of seagulls and black swans to keep the kids entertained. Charli was yelling out "BUM!" at the top of her voice every time she saw a swan do a duck dive and leave its clacker sticking out of the water. Truly a big future for that kid with observational skills like that!? After a while she had all of us riding along yelling it out at the top of our lungs. All class us Queenslanders aye!?
As we got further into town we had noticed the markets were on. After hearing several fishing stories James couldn't resist the surf rod that caught his eye in a stall up ahead. Now no matter how hard he tried the old codger would not budge on his price. What a bargin! in the end $70. Now let's see some fish!! (I doubt it). We took a walk down to the beach where all the action was. About half a dozen fisherman spread along the beach waiting patiently for the big one. James didn't waste any time when we were back at camp. He was getting that rod ready to go join the rest of the fisherman. He returned with an empty bag of bait after 3 hours in the dark and cold. Lucky I had dinner cooked.
There is a footbridge in the centre of town that takes you over to Lakes Entrance main beach. The centre of town is a long esplanade which runs along the shoreline of Cunninghame Arm inlet. The Marina is a great place to get all your fresh seafood straight off the boats. On this trip we have had allot of people wishing they were travelling Australia, but one night huddled around the BBQ's at the camp kitchen one couple (mum, dad and 8yr old Tyler) took centre stage, they were travelling the world for 12 months!! They are spending 3 months in Australia. That trip will be one I'm sure there son is going to remember forever.
A trip to Bairnsdale bought us to the biggest slippery slide that we have come across (without an entry fee) it was built on the side of a hill, pretty cool. Then in the corner of my eye I spotted a flying fox. Charli loved it, Chels at first just screamed to get off but eventually came around. The only trouble then was getting them off it. The girls were in heaven with so many kids to play with at the Lakes caravan park and now with a day trip to another playground! It doesn't get much better than that when you are 4yrs old. They are quite capable around other kids and both of them really enjoy the days they get to just hang out in a playground, their favourite ones are those with big jumping pillows! These things are great and really wear the kids out. With the last few days of the Easter break coming to an end there were still plenty of kids around to play with!
After a couple of pretty good days we were dished up a rainy cooler day just to remind us we were in Victoria I guess. We had our next stop planned and were hoping we would not be driving in the rain. Fingers crossed and off we go!
