Day 108 - Headed off to Rotorua where we stopped at a mud lake where the mud boiled (don't know the science behind it)! But the town is well known to smell...like eggs because of the sulphur lake. To be homest with you, I couldn't smell it but everyone seemed to be able to! Dropped into the place where we booked our Maouri experience for that night...we tried some onion chutney (which I don't think Anthony liked) and a guy gave us a quiz at the end to win a necklace. Paid up and headed off to our Base hostel which was a bit run down to say the least! Had a walk to town and grabbed a $5 pizza (bargin)! Headed off at 5 on our Kiwi canoe to the Maori village. On the way Anthony got choosen to be our Cheif and had to greet the Maori's in their traditional way. We got there and Anthony had to stand at the front while the Maori guys performed their intimidating dance accompied with spears and throw out a leaf for Anthony to pick to let them know that we had come in peace. Then we went through to the recreated villiage where they told us some of the Maori stories and ways of life. Then they entertained us with their dances and singing which was really good. After was the all you can eat dinner that was prepared underground and then a few drinks to round it off. All in all it was a really good night! On the way home onthe bus everyine from the different countries had to come up to the mic at the front and sing their national athem. Put it this way...England was a bit of a let down as no-one seemed to actually know the national athem! Went for a few drinks with 2 Scottish girls that we had met and then off to bed for an earlyish night.
