We drove for the rest of the day towards Tehran, stopping in a small town for lunch (mince kebab in the thin lavash bread they have here, yum), and headed on up the motorway. Adam decided to push on past Tehran before finding a camp so that we wouldn't have to deal with it tomorrow, but getting past the city proved slightly more difficult than just turning onto the next motorway, and there followed about 2 hours driving in circles around the area near Tehran airport in the crazy traffic while we tried to work out how to get out of there. At one point we ended up in a tiny back street where we squeezed around corners and held up traffic for a good 20 mins while locals helped us move cars. Eventually we ended up with a guy in the cab, directing us where to go! The traffic here is pretty nuts, people just go everywhere and no-one seems to crash.
Once we finally got out of town it was already dark, and Adam found a small road lined with trees coming off the motorway where the truck would be hidden from the road. We weren't supposed to stop next to the motorway so we had to set up camp with minimum lights on so we didn't attract attention. There was a bit of light coming from the motorway so it wasn't too bad, but just as we thought we were getting away with it, a police patrol decided to set up a patrol spot right beside where we were, and it didn't take them long to notice us and come over for a look. They were two young guys and they thought we were hilarious, and they couldn't believe how many tents we had.. adam managed to talk them into letting us stay, although i'm not sure whether they would have tried to move us on anyway. By the time dinner was all done it was about 11pm and everyone was shattered.. I don't think it mattered much to anyone that we were camped beside a motorway.
