Quite a misty trip from Te Anau towards Invercargill. Visited Bluff but wished we hadn't - nothing there. Stayed at a Top 10 site about 10 minutes out of Invercargill which is a strange place!! Then drove towards the Catlins, which were magnificent - very lush greenery and loads of trees, with huge deserted beaches. Visited Cathedral Caves which are only accessible when it is low tide. Took shoes off and not sure if it was there or later in the campsite which was in the forest that our ankles got bitten badly !!!! Still stratching two days later.
Came into Dunedin and had a brief wander around before driving to a site on the Otaga Peninsular. Road runs right beside the harbour for 30 kms. Following day visited the Royal Albatross colony and an underground fort and then took the top road across the Peninsular towards Lanarch Castle. The views were amazing and the road very narrow, steep and windy. Weather has been good although we have read reports that some of the coldest weather has been recorded in the areas we have been travelling, since records began. Finally put both quilts on for a few nights. Just filling in this entry before leaving Dunedin towards Omarou and then Christchurch where we hand back the van on Wednesday - flying back to Auckland on Thursday.
Only 13 days left before we are in the UK!!!!!
