Travelled alongside Lake Wakatipu to Kingston where we planned to have a ride on the Kingston Flyer. Martin was in his element. It was a cute little train. The campsite that night felt a bit odd at first , but improved when other vans arrived. Trip to Lake Te Anau was dramatic as we crossed the plains with 120km wind. Martin had to slow down considerably and keep both hands on the steering wheel.
Decided to go for both the Sounds as some people said each was better than the other. Doubtful Sound first, which involved a short coach ride, a trip across Lake Manapour, a further coach ride and then boarding the boat. Doubtful Sound was brilliant. On the way back a coach trip into the depth of the mountain to see the hydro electric power station.
Following morning an early start as we were collected at 7.30 for the Milford Sound trip. The coach ride was extremely dramatic - Martin able to enjoy the scenery without worrying about the steep climbs and descents. Homer Tunnel was in the middle of nowhere - a great achievement to build it. Milford Sound very dramatic scenery.
Which was best - both very different. DS trip on water ten times longer than MS but more scenic. Journey to MS AWESOME to say the least and although smaller is so much more dramatic especially looking back at it from the sea as at first you cannot see it and then suddenly its there in all its majesty
