We decided to fly to Phnom Penh as we didn't fancy a 20+ hour bus journey. We still ended up travelling for 12 hours though! Not amused.
We arrived in Phnom Penh and got a taxi to our hotel. The traffic is ridiculous and there is literally no rules. We were on a dual carriage way and there were 2 lanes. In the two lanes were 2 cars, a tuk tuk and a motorbike wherever the was a space. Our hotel was clean, very central and a really comfy bed at a 10er a night we didn't do bad.
Our receptionist was the most helpful person we've met on the trip. I being me (Jake) ballsed up our Vietnam visa big time! We wanted it for the 25th January but I put 25th of Feb. Even though Anne Marie checked the paper work and copied my form it was my fault completely!! We asked him where the Vietnamese embassy was to sort our visa and he said no problem, I do it cheaper. So we gave him out passports and two days later we have a visa to Vietnam for the right dates paying half the price we did at home! Cambodia so far has been a big hit with us and with beers costing 40p why wouldn't it be!!
The second day we woke up early and went to the killing fields and prison s21. This day will stay with us for the rest of our lives. We both came away reflecting on what terrible things people can do to other people and felt kind of bad we didn't know more about this. We arrived at the killings fields and had an audio tour. Literally not one person spoke for over an hour. Just stop after stop we learnt about the horrible things that happened in that exact spot not so long ago. 1/4 of the entire population of Cambodia died during the Khmer Rouge period and it said that almost every Cambodian person that we meet will have had a family member killed. The most shocking bit for us was the killing tree. It was where members of the Khmer Rouge would take babies off the mothers and hit them across the tree making them watch.
The prison was worse as everything has been left the same as when it was used for torturing people. The only difference was that they had tried to clean up all the blood. It was a school and they used to tell professionals like doctors, teachers and policeman that they were going there to help, only for them to never come out again.
The Russian market was a glorified par market. You could buy anything you wanted! It was incredibly hot in there so we left after picking up some bargains after bartering the price down to less than half!
Cambodia so far seems a lot poorer than Thailand. There are many homeless people sitting on the streets. There are also children that are homeless running round scaring tourists by jumping out at them. They do seem really happy and always want to play! Some children are selling things to people sat in restaurants. One of them, after we said no, said that when we have a child it will be born a ladyboy! Another said it will be a lesbian that isn't loved by anyone!! Charming!
We're now sat on a 'vip' bus (although roselyns coaches to Brannel were better) to Siem Reap, however it does has wifi! It's from one end of the country to the other and according to travel blogs I've read it's gonna be a bumpy ride! I'm
