Anish's Travels
Day 71, 72, 73, 74, 75 (20/05 - 24/05)
Crossed the border into Malaysia on the morning of the 20th and headed to Kota Bharu. Spent the night here, and then at 6am the next morning took the Jungle railway to Taman Negara National Park. Anohter long journey, about 10 hours.
Arrived at a town called Jerantut, and connected to a bus that took us to the park. Arrived at the park at about 6pm and seeked out some accommodation.
The next day (22nd) was more memorbale than fun. The morning was ok. We hiked up to the canopy walk, which is a walkway of suspension bridges in the canopy of the forest. Was cool. Then we hiked to a high up viewing point. Then hiked back to the floating restaurants for lunch. Altogether that morning we did about 5km. the afternoon and early evening was murder. After eating lunch and renting a sleeping bag, we set off on a 12km hike to the furthest hide (a high up wooden hut on stilts) We chose the furthest one (well Len did) because it was the best chance of seeing animals. Anyways, doing this hike was the worst choice i have made on this trip. It was brutal. Constantly up and down hills, and even had to repel down one hill. The last 3-4km were the most gruelling and painful thing i have ever done. I was on the verge of collapsing towards the end. My legs and feet kept cramping up and i could barely walk. This was a hardcore hike! Len took my bag, and the pace picked up a bit, but it was still agony. And we needed to reach before dark, and darkness was apraoching rapidly, so we couldnt stop for rests. The last 1.5km we had to do in the dark, and i even managed to run for a little bit..don't know now. I think i only managed to reach the hide purely on adrenaline anda mars bar. An essential item when hiking..choclate. We arrived at the hide after about 5 hours of hiking and there was one other person there. There were 6 wooden bunk beds and i didnt bring a mat. So i slept in the sleeping bag on basically a wooden plank, and i didnt have a towek so i used my towel and a spare t-shirt. Not the best nights sleep, but i was just glad to get some rest. Also found that i had been attacked by 3 leaches, one of which i burnt off when i reached the hide. Two of them had fallen off before i had noticed the blood stain on my trousers. There were rats running around all night, and Len killed 2 of them with my shoe..no blood on my shoe, but was funny. We had to hang our food up so the rats wouldnt get to it. Len is an experienced hiker so he had no problem at all with the hike and carrying my bag.
The next morning (23rd), we hiked for 45 minutes to the jetty and the boat took us back to town. The hike was pretty easy, it was a well worn trail, and my legs had recovered enough to do it. We got back to town and checked back into our rooms before heading for lunch. Then some more hiking after lunch with a couple of germans we met on the train here. We hiked to some caves that were full of bats..literally the bat cave. We scrambled through the cave, about 80 metres, climbing up and over rocks. Was fun..was just like rock climbing. Then we hiked back to town and did nothing for the rest of the day, just relaxed.
On the 24th we left Taman Negara on a 2 hour long boat journey down the river through the jungle. We connected on to a bus and then another bus to get to Kuala Lumpur and here i am now.
Tomorrow off to the Petronas towers.
