Trying to fly to Costa Rica
Ok so the plan was to leave the last party at about 3 to get to the airport for 4 to catch our flight at 6. We left about on time and stopped for a coffee with Mario before he dropped us off at about 4.20. We went to check in straight away but were told we couldnt board the flight unless we could prove we had an onward flight out of Costa Rica...which we didnt as we hadnt got around to booking one yet! So after discovering there was no free wifi this side of the security desk (I mean why would there be?!!) we paid $7.99 to get internet access which was ridiculously slow. This hindered us in our attempts to find and book our flight from Costa Rica to Cuba. Even when we did find one we tried 3 different cards and each one was refused as we got to the 'visa verification' which comes up every time we purchase something online. Sometimes it will let us ignore it, other times if we enter our details 3 times it forces it through but not on this occasion. If anyone reading this knows how to stop it coming up or regiter it so it actually stays registered please let us know...its driving us crazy!! Anyway our next course of action was to see if any of the airlines in the airport flew this route and to purchase a ticket with them....they didnt :( So we tried to just buy any flight out of Costa Rica with Spirit who we were flying with, we could do this but unfortunately time had run out and we had in all essence missed our flight! So we asked them to rearrange it to the next flight (at a transfer cost of $125 each) which was at 8 this evening and as we'd have all day in the airport would give us plenty of time to sort out our flight to Cuba. As we were doing this the lady sorting our flights came over with the paperwork to sign and some good news. As she was rearranging our flights she came across a message saying our flight to Costa Rica had been downgraded and they were now overbooked and therefore offering anyone who would take a later flight no transfer fees and also 3 free round trip flights on their airline to any destination they fly to!! So fingers crossed this is our flight back to New York to get home sorted! We thanked her for her help and then set about finding somewhere to get some sleep as it was now 7.30 and not only had we been up nearly 24 hours but we'd danced for at least 15 of them!!! The rest of that day was spent dozing on uncomfortable chairs where the arms dont fold up, then on the floor for a while until the noise and light and cold (ridiculous amount of aircon in american airports!) forced us to get up and move around. By this time I was feeling full of cold and was not happy until we got on our flight that evening and it was nice and warm. I fell asleep so quickly I didnt even see the safety demo let alone take off! We arrived 3 hours later in Fort Lauderdale where it was raining heavily and because of the time difference it was only 10pm so we had a bite to eat and a hot drink...if possible this airport was even colder, before once again searching for somewhere to sleep.
