We were up for breakfast again today, quite happily enjoying our sausage and egg sandwiches when 3 rather fat Americans appeared and perfectly demonstrated why they are so overweight, not content to enjoy their free all you can eat breakfast they had already been out and bought a box of 12 dunkin doughnuts to bring to breakfast with them!! Finding this equally funny and sickening we decided to quickly finish our own food and get ready for the 2-3 mile walk into old San Juan which we intended to visit today. The walk into town started off quite pleasant with lovely sunshine and views out across the seas but soon enough it started to rain again so we went into KFC for a drink as it was the only shelter nearby. We were then stuck inside for almost an hour waiting for the rain to stop and when it finally did we walked the remaining mile or so until we reached a fort which marks the beginning of Old San Juan. In colonial times the city was walled and most of these fortifications are still standing today meaning you can go for a walk around the city walls which is what we intended to do, but first we decided to visit a few of the gift and clothes shops to see if they had anything worth getting. After visiting several of these shops we eventually came to the conclusion that there wasn't, especially since all the clothes were in silly American sizes. By this time we had ended up at 'Pigeon Park' where there were a load if idiots feeding the millions of pigeons which give the park it's name. We opted to avoid walking through the park itself and instead went around the corner to see 'La Forteleza' which is apparently the oldest governors palace in the Americas although I'm sure I've heard this claim about 2 or 3 buildings while we've been travelling. In any case they had for some strange reason painted it bright blue and as such it just looked like a large cake, we both agreed it was a very ugly building. After discovering that part of the path around the walls was closed due to a landslide we walked back through the very pretty streets which reminded us very much of Cuba with all the different colours and the style in which they are built until we reached the cathedral, which turned out to be rather dull, a plain white building in quite poor repair. We continued our wanderings up to the other fort in the old city situated at the furthest end from our hotel where we discovered a big lovely park which borders the sea and runs all the way along the north side of the city wall. We admired the large fort from a distance as we had no money to go in and spent a little while relaxing in the park where we found some shade to escape the now very hot sun. Having by now walked all the way round the colonial centre we thought it was time to head back to the hotel. The walk back took us along the north side of the walled city where we could admire the views out over the sea and watch the very large ships in the distance. For dinner we had a box of Tacos from the nearby Taco Bell and supplemented it with a bottle of Lemon Rum which turned out to be delicious and settled down to watch a film on the TV.
