We started the day by taking the scenic route down through the National forest rather than the interstate, this way was quite a bit longer than the direct route but we had plenty of time since we didn't need to be in Billings until 7pm. This decision rewarded us with spectacular views across wide plains as well as the forest itself which was full of lovely creeks and ponds dotted either side of the road. As we emerged from the forest we came across a town called White Sulphur Springs, although how it got this name I have no idea as there were no springs sulphurous or otherwise to be seen in the place, this seems a common trait in Montana since Great Falls didn't appear to have any falls either. Slightly disappointed we continued on our way. About 5 hours after we left the rest area we found ourselves driving along a ridge which offered us spectacular view of the town of Billings, which is the largest settlement in the state of Montana despite only having a little over 100,000 people. After killing a few hours catching up with the blog and checking emails we went to meet our hosts for that night, Rob and Carey. We caught them just as they were finishing up for the day looking rather tired and dusty. However they instantly made us feel welcome and as they cleaned up we sorted our kit out. We then went out for dinner with them and their son and daughter in law. They took us to a restaurant called Perkins where I had a southernn fried chicken salad and Mae had the Kung Pow Shrimp Salad. Both dishes were excellent and it was nice to have something fresh to eat for a change. We also had tried crinkle cut some sweet potato fries, which were YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!! We then went back to the house to have a piece of the velvet chocolate pie, which was also delicious if a little rich. after that we stayed up chatting until 1am as Mae and Rob swapped horse and motorbike stories two things they both had in common.
