Miami style salsa?
After a quick trip to the tourist information at the rest stop to pick up a map and some information we set off again. As we drove further into Florida we found that palm trees started to creep their way into the hedgerows at the side of the road. The further south we went the more palm trees until eventually that's all there is. After several more hours driving we arrived in Miami at about 7pm and headed straight for Hollywood (not that one obviously) Beach, where a kind lady let us use her parking meter which still had an hour left on it. We were shocked to discover that the sea here is at bath temperature and substantially warmer than the sand of the beach it's on. Mae was less impressed to find that there were jellyfish in the ocean. Not that we saw any apart from one dead one on the beach. After a brief paddle and relax we decided it was time to go dancing!! After failing to find 2 separate rest stop where we had planned to get changed we gave up and headed straight for the venue. We had to drive around for a bit tofind parking but once we realised the town centre multi storey car parks only charge $1 an hour we were all set. A few minutes walk, admiring the city with all the shop that have mannequins with HUGE boobs (definitely some 'plastic surgery' gone on there) and then we could hear the faint beats of the salsa club. It was the upstairs of a restaurant in South Beach which had a tiled and quite sticky floor where there were lessons followed by dancing from 11 until 2.30. The 2 hour lesson cost $40 (nearly £30) each, and on top of this you needed to do a placement to be put in the correct group. This seemed a bit excessive for us as we were only staying 2 days so we decided not to bother with the lessons. We both had some good dances with Mae hardly being off the dancefloor and getting a mix of On1, cuban and On2, although several ladies refused to dance with me without providing any reason. Apparently people here dance 'Miami style' salsa although it is effectively what we call Cuban style back home, I will have to wait until I have been to Cuba and see if their style is actually any different. At the end we went and talked to the DJs and one of them informed us that he was hosting an event the next night with a local live salsa band. After a brief walk on the beach we headed off to find somewhere to spend the night. I have to say at this point that as we've found with most cities, they look best at night, but Miami in particular is beautiful! It covers a vast area and is spectacular to see from near or far with all the different coloured lights on the buildings. We like Miami :)
