A 3 1/2 hour drive and we made it to Litchfield National Park. We chose a good caravan park near the entrance to the park so we wouldn't have to drive to long to see the sights. Our caravan site had a cover over it which meant we didn't have to put our awning up...sa-weet!!
There was a nice pool there where we spent many hours in over these few days. We met two nice girls fromt the UK who had been working in Melbourne for 6 months at Circa, where Andy's sister Kara and her husband JP got married last year! It was nice talking to them about good old Melbourne.
We had a look at the sites in the National Park and went to see the Magnetic Termite Mounds. According to Andy, they are not called the magnetic terminte mounds because you can stick a magnet to it, but because they face magnetic north. Thanks Andy! They do that so that the least amount of surface area faces the sun. Clever little termites. Other than that, they weren't that interesting as they were too far away to really see them properly.
Over the next few days we went to Wangi Falls (the most popular falls in the park). We went for the walk up to the top of the falls and then back down the other side. It was only 10am but BAD IDEA!! We went through our bottle of water in about 20 mins and again, it was SO BLOODY HOT! We were rewarded when we finished the walk with a lovely swim in the falls. We took our noodles so we could just float around. Again, this was a croc controlled zone, but I gathered that the chances were pretty slim of me being taken as there were SO many people in the water. :)
We also went to the Tolmi Falls to take photos (no swimming there as it is home to various species of bat. 1. gross, and 2. if people go swimming there then the bats will get scared and fly away and then the species may become extinct!)
We then went off road! There was a 4WD track to a Homestead that was used many years ago. It was very interesting to see where and how people lived. The house was tiny and apparently 14 children were raised there! eek! There was a tin mine behind the house and it was interesting to know that people worked there so many years ago.
Our favourite place were the Florence Falls. This was a much smaller swimming hole but still a lot of people. The falls were so powerful that when I went underneath them, they pushed me under. Crazy! The water was really clear and you could see all the fish swimming around.
The last sight that we saw was Blueys Rockhole on the morning of the AFL grandfinal. This place was packed with people which wasn't the nicest environment to be trying to enjoy the pools. There were about 6 pools all up, all on different levels of the hill. We started at the bottom one and made our way to the top. The water here was much cooler than the other falls we had been to. The water here was SO clear. You could see the bottom of some of the pools but they were really deep! We even jumped in a few as they were so deep. Good fun!
When we were getting ready for the Grand Final, I saw one of my students! Who would have thought I would run into a student in the NT! Very funny but it was nice to catch up and see how everything was going back at school. We enjoyed the AFL grand final at the Caravan park with about 10 others. More arrived at the end of the game. We enjoyed many ciders/beers and a yummy burger. Everyone then retired to the pool for more drinks and a cool off.
We loved our time in Litchfield. The people we met were lovely and the sights were incredible!!
