The day we left Litchfield National Park it was pouring with rain! Luckily we only had a 1 1/2 hour drive to Darwin from there.
We chose the Shady Glen Caravan Park which we found a few days later, was a big mistake. The ground was covered in leaf litter and because of the rain, there were SO many bugs and flying things that bit us! We were eated alive there! So we tried to get out of the park as much as possible.
One of our favourite places to go was the Waterfront, which I thought was going to be like Melbourne's Southbank...except it was really tiny. We had many drinks while watching the NRL grand final and dinner also. There is a lagoon there with its own beach etc. There is also a wave pool. We went to the wave pool for a few hours one day which was nice. Very busy though! We found that it was so easy getting into the 'city' of Darwin and parking there was dirt cheap, so we found ourselves in the city every day.
Mitchell street was a great place for a few beverages and is also home to Crocosaurus Cove. $30 entry each and we saw HUGE crocs being fed, turtles, an aquarium full of fish and at the end we were in the perfect position in the park to be the first ones to 'catch crocs'. We walked through a fenced off area and were given a fishing rod with a bit of meat on the end. We held the meat in the air and the crocs jump to get the meat. It was a good avo there!
The city was also a good place to shop! We got some good christmas presents for the fam there. Another amazing place for some shopping were the Mindle Markets on the beach. The day we got there they were cancelled due to the rain (it didn't rain!) and we extended our stay in Darwin so we ended up going to the bigger market on the Sunday night! We bought many presents and sat on the beach to eat our dinner as the sunset. beautiful!!
Our air con decided to not work the day we arrived in Darwin and for the rest of the time Andy was on a mission to get it fixed. About 100 phonecalls later we finally had it booked in to get fixed!! Thank goodness for that!! We couldn't handle sleeping in 38 degrees any longer!!! Not even our new wiz-bang fan helped with that heat!
We enjoyed our time in Darwin but we wouldn't rush back and we would stay somewhere else...damn bugs!!
