Today we took a city tour of Lima. We saw lots of large colonial style buildings in the centre of the city. It seemed fairly quiet for a capital city (certainly not as busy as London!). Lots of the buildings have impressive balconies, some of which are designed to be able to see into, others not. We got quite a few pictures, but the cafe we´re in doesn´t have anyway to upload them; they may appear later. Also on the tour we visited the San Francisan Monastry. Again this was an impressive building - the old library looked like something out of Harry Potter, with huge ancient books and a ´mezzanine´ type level accessible via wooden spiral staircases (one either side). No photos were allowed in the monastry though.
Underneath the monastry were catacombs. For about 300 years (until 1808 we think!) they used them as public graves. The poorest people just got their bodies lobbed into a big well, whilst the wealthier were put into coffins. After a couple of hundred years the coffins decomposed....Quite gruesome down there!
The weather in Lima is interesting. They don't have any rain and it's overcast for six months of the year!
