We tried again to post our walking sticks home but we forgot it was Sunday and the Post Office was closed. We wanted to get a good spot for the fireworks and from looking at our New Year fireworks map, we figured that Mrs Macquarie’s Chair would be the best place for us to stand. We couldn’t figure out how to get there as there were barriers up to direct pedestrians so we asked at an information booth at the back of the hotel for directions. We were told that it was a bit of a walk and there was a big queue as bags were being searched as there was no alcohol allowed to be brought it. We gave up on that idea and decided to walk around Circular Quay in the direction of the Bridge to find a good spot. Just passed the Overseas Passenger Terminal there was a roundabout at the end of the road with a couple of steps down to a pedestrianised area on the shoreline. From there we had a good view of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge and it wasn’t too busy when we sat down at 2:30pm (yes we got out that early for the fireworks – we had planned our whole trip around seeing the fireworks in Sydney so we wanted a good spot!). We sat on the edge of that roundabout reading our books and contemplating life, whilst it was getting busier around us. We wanted some beer and spent ages trying to find one (we later found out that alcohol is not sold in supermarkets as we were used to and that was where we were looking...). From 8pm or so it was getting really packed and we had to stand up. The trips to the toilets took at least 20mins to battle out through the crowd, queue and battle back. But 9pm came and we saw the family fireworks. They were ok, but altogether not that exciting. Once they had finished, it was getting even busier where we were. People kept trying to push past us to get to the front and we were felling very crammed in. At 10:30pm we decided to give up and leave that spot as we wouldn’t have enjoyed watching the fireworks from there. We walked to underneath the Bridge then down to the shore line right near the south pylon; here we had lots more space and we could still see the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, which was great! The midnight fireworks were absolutely fantastic! Fireworks were going off from barges in the river, from on the Bridge, and even from the skyscrapers on both sides on the bay! It was absolutely spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed it! On the way back to the hotel, a pub was playing music outside and the whole street was packed with people dancing. Quite a sight!
