Today we went diving with Lets Go Diving at Shelly Beach, down from Manly Beach. We were picked up from the hotel and driven down there. Our guide had joined the Navy when he was 15, they taught him to dive and sent him to some very nice places around the world, but now he runs a dive company. We were joined by two Americans on our dive trip, so a nice small group. We drove down to the beach and got set up. We used integrated weight belts, which meant the weights were placed in the BCD / stab jacket, rather than resting on your hips. So simple, but an excellent design and it meant that Andy didn’t get back ache like normal, which meant the dive was far more enjoyable. Just off Shelly Beach is a marine reserve; a protected area of coast. This meant we could just walk off the beach into a fantastic dive area, which pleased Andrea as it meant no boat to get sea sick on! We had two dives, both of which were excellent. The visibility was excellent and we saw loads of wildlife. On the first dive the highlights of what we saw were Wobblegongs, Eastern Blue Groper, Stingrays and a Weedy Sea Dragon! We finished off by looking at a motorbike that someone dumped there at least 15 years ago. The second dive’s highlights were a Common Cuttlefish, more Stingrays and a Bennett’s Nudibranch! Our guide had a digital underwater camera with him and took loads of photos of us which were included in the price; very nice not to have to pay extra for photos like everywhere else we’d been! As we were getting changed after the dives a wedding party arrived for photos on the beach. On of the wedding cars was a 1950’s stretched Cadillac, which we would have loved to have had at our wedding, but we couldn’t find one. Back in Sydney, we dropped our fellow divers off at their hotel and on the way we saw China Town and fancied a Chinese. However it was a long walk down there from our hotel and we hadn’t figured out the public transport so we tried to go back to Wok On Inn, but they said they were really busy and couldn’t serve us for ages. So we had a wander around and found this small Japanese restaurant down an alley next to the Marriott; Andrea did really well spotting it from the road as it is very well hidden. The restaurant was quite basic, but the food was cheap and really nice; a good way to end an enjoyable day.
