On our last day in Interlaken we decided to try to hike up to where there was snow on one of the trails that started near our hostel. We met two girls along the way that had the same idea, but they realized about 2 minutes into the hike that they were no match for Jeff and I so we left them behind. We hiked and hiked and hiked. A couple of times the trail went through a pasture and we had to lock the gate behind us as we crossed through, while side stepping cow pies.
We never made it up to snow, we didn't have all day so we had to turn around and head to the hostel. We did make it to a substantial altitude though; all in all we hiked probably 9 or 10 miles. We decided to do laundry at Dude's Laundry Bar (the only time on this trip…) which was probably not the best choice because they used a steam dryer and we didn't have quite enough time to wait 1.5 hrs for a wash and another 1.5 hrs for them to dry, so we had to live with damp pants for a while.
We got to the train back to Bern no problem, then caught our train to Paris a few minutes later. We rolled into Paris at 11 or so and found our hostel. I made contact with mom and dad via Jeff's iPhone—pretty handy! We called to tell them all about hang-gliding; I thought it'd be better to tell them over the phone than in an email or something.
Note to other travelers:I found that the most effective greeting is "Hi mom, well you can hear our voices so you know we're not dead!" After that you can say pretty much anything, for us it was "Yeah, so yesterday we jumped off a cliff with wings tied to our backs!" They took that pretty well…
The hostel situation made for an even more fun night… I had accidentally booked only one bed (the last bed) for Thursday night and two beds on Friday at St. Christopher's hostel. Those kinds of things can happen when you book hostels the day before, there's not much availability in Paris on a weekend. When we got there I didn't exactly lie, but I made it sound like we had 2 beds booked for us both nights and they magically had enough beds so we didn't have to share…
