Well not much has changed since our last blog. We are still staying with Caroline and her children and having a great time, its so nice to have some home comforts and not live out of a rucksack! Andrew is still working for Bayside City Council, his boss is really cool so he is enjoying it and earning lots of money for us - which is good because I still have not found a job yet!
I had a nice surprise last Wednesday, Jen from Leeds text me to say she was in Melbourne so we met up for the afternoon, which was great to see someone from home and catch up on all the gossip! We had lunch, wandered around the very posh crown complex which has a light and water fountain show in time to music and a huge casino that was full of gamblers even at 2pm in the afternoon!
We also went to the Old Melbourne Gaol which is where they used to lock up and sometimes hang hundreds of convicts, including the infamous Ned Kelly. It was interesting but a little spooky to look around!
Included was a Police Watch Tower Experience tour, the station was only closed in 1994 and is now a National Trust site. You get taken on the tour as if you are a convist yourself, you are shouted at, inspected and then locked up in the cell with the lights off for a while! It would have been quite scary except as the lights went off a person's mobile started ringing they answered it "Hello ... I'm locked up in a prision cell sitting in the dark!!" Needless to say we all burst out laughing!
This weekend the weather has been lovely, really hot and sunny! So we made the most of it, especially now our sightseeing has been limited to the weekends!
Saturday we went on a tour of the MCG, it is a huge stadium, really nicely done. Our tour guide was a bit balmy but really knew his stuff so gave a very interesting tour. Andrew now has plans for us to see the Boxing Day Test Match if we can get tickets!
The Saturday afternoon we went to an area of Melbourne called Fitzroy, it reminded us quite a bit of Camden in London, with a really cool vibe. There was a real mix of people there from the rich to the poor, lots of students! The main street Brunswick street is very hectic and filled with little eclectic shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, we stopped at one for dinner and a bottle of wine and sat there in the sunshine people watching - bliss!
Sunday we went to St.Kilda which was completely heaving with people! Again a real mix of people in the place, but mainly it was the rich and bronzed hanging out on the beach, students etc all drinking and eating in the bars, cafes and restaurants and families strolling around the pier, going to Luna Park (a small theme park) and the Esplanade where there was a big arts and crafts market.
We had a great weekend but were completely knackered by the end after walking around in the sun all weekend - but its doing wanders for my tan and Andrew's farmers arms!
Hope everyone is ok!
Lots of Love
Sarah and Andrew xxx
