We left Laos at about 7pm and headed to Vietnam on the worst bus ever, firstly they had these tiny seats that you climbed up to that were reclining but there really wasn't enough room for both of us so Casson decided to sleep on the floor of the bus underneath the seats on what can only be described as a really uncomfortable gym mat that you would use at school. 5 minutes later I was down there with him as the guy in the seat in front kept turning round blatantly staring at me and was making me feel uncomfortable. Even once I'd moved he kept leaning over the side and craning his neck to stare.
So there we were sleeping on the floor of a bus, there was no toilet on board and no toilet stops. I thought I was going to wet myself so at 2am in the morning I found myself behind the back of the bus almost being burnt by the heat coming off the engine!
The guy above us kept dropping fruit peelings on Casson, we killed at least 3 big bugs and then in the morning they picked up some boxes that absolutely stank but put them right next to us, we worked out they were full of birds and bird sh*t!
We made it to Vinh and then got the first bus out in the morning to Hue, thankfully this bus was much better.
Hue was nice, we spent the first day looking round the citadel and walking round the river. Unfortunately today was another day I decided to make a show of myself. In the citadel I was heading to the bathroom which was through an archway and round a corner. As I went round the corner there was a huge dog there that looked like a wolf, I must have startled it as it jumped, growled and then started running towards me with a much smaller black dog following. Obviously I know the worst thing you can do is run, so I didn't do that. Who am I kidding, I panicked, bolted away screaming for Casson, as I got back round the corner Casson saw me and shouted for me to stop running so I immediately stood still, the huge wolf was nowhere in sight and the small black dog just trotted past me! I'm a complete embarrassment. In my defence though, the wolf was massive and not at all friendly!
On our second day we went to see some tombs, it sounds gruesome but the setting was beautiful with lakes and temples. It was really peaceful there so not a bad p!ace to be buried.
We decided to have our very own topgear moment by riding over the Hai Van pass on the way to Hoi An. As we had all our luggage we hired a couple of local guides to take us on their bikes as they were bigger so could fit the bags on. It was such a good day, we took in loads of sites along the way and the views travelling over the pass were amazing with coastline visible all the way to the top. Once at the top there are old American bunkers and views to Hue on one side and Danang on the other.
Next stop Hoi An....
General points
1) It's official, I hate rats and will never be comfortable around them. We were having breakfast one morning and this huge rat comes running across the road towards us. I ended up sat with my feet up on the chair. The locals don't even flinch
