Going by bus and train from Laos to Vietnam, then all the way down Vietnam, then from Saigon [the name used on the ticket] to Cambodia is great for breaking journey-time records. You get a sore bottom and an aching back as well.
The black market in tickets is a world you have to enter sometimes, but if you don't mind a soft seat with air con. for the night go to the ticket booth. Go there well in advance!
The map is showing Phnom Penh where we stayed for one night. Siem Reap is just above the large lake.
On 3rd July another couple of buses will take us back to Bangkok where we meet our daughter Kate on 4th.
Before then we will explore the temples of Angkor. And cringe every time we think about our entrance ticket money going to an oil company!
Please tell us it isn't true!
Yesterday and today [30/06 - 01/07] we've been visiting temples - and what temples they are!
Angkor Wat is said to be the largest religious structure in the world. Despite the humidity and rain of the monsoon, we managed to enjoy half a day exploring the many nooks and crannies of this 12th century masterpiece. The cloisters almost form a square running around the outer margin of the complex, they are 800m long altogether. The inside walls of the cloisters are covered with bas-relief - extraordinary!
The other wonders around here are Ta Prohm, a temple partly covered by the jungle that features in the film Tomb Raider and Banteay Srei with beautifully preserved bas-relief.
We've travelled to all these places in a remorque - moto. Well what's one of those? I can hear you all saying! It's described in the Lonely Planet guide as a unique form of transport to Siem Reap, "..a motorcycle with a twee little hooded carriage towed behind." Very cosy.
On the way back to our hotel today a miracle happened. Ana, being of a certain age, takes off her glasses to use her video camera. The 'twee' transport doesn't have very much of a side so if you drop anything guess where it lands? That's right on the road, quickly moving into the distance!
Lots of heavy traffic uses these roads so it wasn't very surprising to be overtaken by a huge truck as we slowed to a stop.
A car pulls up behind us and a man leaves his car holding what looks like a pair of glasses - condition undeciferable!
Amazing, Ana's glasses and not a scratch to be seen!
