Amy's Adventures
The temples in Siem Reap were amazing. We were so lucky, every time we left a temple 3 or 4 coaches of tourists turned up so we managed to avoid the big crowds and in the morning the place was deserted - you could just hear the birds and there were loads of butterflys, it was really surreal. Its crazy that they don't protect the buildings though, you can climb all over them and go where ever you want - health and safety is just unheard of! We left at 5am to watch sunrise over Ankor Wat and walked all day, got back after sunset at 5.30pm. I was knackered!! I had some beers with these nice Belgian girls I met. The beer was $0.50 a mug so we took full advantage of it..... It was a good night... I'm in Vietnam now. There are 8 million motorbikes in total and I reckon a large proportion of them are just in Saigon! It's by far the craziest city I've ever been to. You literally risk your life every time you step out of your guesthouse. Theres no rules, they come at you in all directions, even on the pavement - its just indescribable. I've seen 3 crashes in 2 days, the last one was pretty bad and the guy just drove off leaving this poor woman bleeding all over the road and people dodging around her! I went to the war museum today, it was 'funny' to see how anti American it was. What surprised me the most was the devastating effects of this stuff called Agent Orange which the Americans sprayed over all the landscape to kill the vegetation. Theres pictures of hundreds of deformed babies that were born as a result - both American and Vietnamese. The stuff was that bad, theres still women here today that are infertile because their great grandparents ate fish that was contaminated. Really sad. After that we went to see the Cu Chi Tunnels (that were built by the Vietnanese in the war). The underground network is pretty impressive, people lived under there for months like giant ants. God knows how though - We got to go climb through a 100m one, it started off ok. You have to go feet first in the dark with your arms over your head, after about 5 minutes, people started freaking out and it was so tight and hot I couldn't breath. Its impossible to go back so you have to just keep going. I chickened out about half way with most of the group and took the escape tunnel back to the surface. It was good to tick the box but I have no intention of ever doing that again!
