We were up and out just after 9am as we were catching the 11am boat over to Alcatraz Island. We had to catch an old street car which is pretty much the same as a tram but not the ones you think of when you think of San Francisco; those ones are known here as cable cars. We got there in plenty of time and were even able to change our time to the 10.30am departure.
We've had the sun for the past couple of days but today was foggy (San Francisco is well known for it's fog) and freezing! We didn't get a great view of the island from the boat because of the fog.
Alcatraz Island is actually part of the National Park's System which I didn't know. You could only eat, drink or smoke at the dock and nowhere else on the island, and nothing could be removed, including rocks and flowers!
It was an uphill walk to the cell house which is where we started our audio tour. I don't normally bother with audio tours but this was included in the price of our ticket and is actually award winning!
It was narrated by former correctional officers and inmates and was actually very good. It lasted for 45 minutes and you were directed around the prison. There were sound effects in the background when a fight broke out or a phone rang so this was really good.
I have wanted to visit Alcatraz for years so I'm so glad I can finally say I've been, it was well worth it.
We grabbed some lunch after this and then made our way back to the hostel for a bit. While we were sat in the kitchen Kelly and I both felt our chairs moving all of a sudden. i joked saying maybe it was an earthquake but didn't think anymore of it. It wasn't until later on we found out it actually was an earthquake and it measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. San Francisco has a lot of earthquakes we found out.
Bed early tonight as we have to get up at 4.45am to get ready to go to Yosemite National Park, can't wait!!
