Monday 17 August.
Nothing interesting happened today so I will share my thoughts on the homeless of New York. There are many different types. Which is to be expected I guess, with everyone being different and all. There are those with their trolleys (or wheelchairs or...) of stuff (recyclables and the like) or those with signs who just sit there. Those with rude signs who come up and intimidate and confront you and those who try to insult you into giving. Those who ask politely if you can spare 1penny. Those arguing with the police and those trying to hide from. Sleeping in streets, over air vents, in parks. Homelessness is complicated for sure. Do you help by giving money? Or should you give food? And who carry's food around just to give out?
Mental illness is often a factor or a cause. I saw a stat on a train that child homelessness has gone up from 16,000 to 20,000 this year. Where do you start with a problem like that when apartments are well over $million and projects are full?
I wonder why they choose to live here in an expensive big city where reasonable living is difficult. Thankfully I haven't seen obvious homeless children. Maybe they are in school in the day. I hope so.
