Wednesday 8 July
We awake 4:30 and get our stuff into the car and leave. We have to in San Francisco by 9:30 to drop the car off. I doze. We stop in a small town at a car wash to pack our bags, dry the tent and wash the car. It takes a lot longer to get where we are going than the gps tells us and we are about 1/2 - 1 hour late to drop the car off. We go down to the rental desk and get another rental. It just makes sense. It's cheaper to reserve online than at the desk, so Mal books it online then gets the car from the desk. It's only like $12 a day. We go back to collect it and we get a chev cruise and head off. But not long down the road it says there is something wrong with the motor oil and battery. We decide to go back and end up getting another car. A new Toyota. It's a bit of a rigmarole but get go and head down town. After finding a park we head to the main square. It's cold and windy and in glad for my jacket. We get some maps but as we are walking toward the first attraction we get accosted by the bus tour company's and we give in and take the tour around the city points. We get off at the pier and wander around the stores. The golden bridge is very windy. I love the houses all close together and multi storey Victorian and Italian style. Overall reminds me a bit of Wellington. There are so many spots that would be great to visit. Especially the massive park. It's about 6pm by the time it's over. We find out parking is very steep! Overall seems to be an expensive place. we decide to get heading up the coast. It's a long drive to Seattle! We stop for dinner and stop at an expensive campground. Nearly $60 for a tent overnight! At least free hit showers and clean bathrooms. I'm exhausted and sleep well after the shower. It's a great temperature.
