It was time for our first Vietnamese night bus and had already warned Fran and Paul that the standard of night buses in Aisa wasn't exactly first class transport. However, much to our surprise we were greeted with a bus which had BEDS!! Well not exactly a full on bed with matress and duvet but close enough. The bus was very modern and clean and most of us slept most of the journey down from Hanoi to Hue a town 12 hours south.
When we arrived in Hue around 9am we managed to get a cheap taxi to our hotel and were able to check in early. We all showered and because of our good nights sleep didn't feel the need for a nap. Instead we grabbed some cheap breakfast and set out exploring the city. The weather was very warm and we spent most of the day walking around. We went into the Imperial City (The Citadel), which is like a City inside a City and was where the emperor used to live, it even had a moat surrounding it. They are rebuilding a lot of it now but there was still lots of the original builldings from many years ago. After a few hours the heat was starting to get to us, so we found a nice bar along the riverside that had a rooftop for us to enjoy a cold beer and look out at the city views.
We then wandered back to our hostel to get ready for some food. We decided to try out the night market for something to eat but unfortunately it was mostly just clothes and souveniers so found somewhere in the town to grab some food. Once again we all had lovely meals and have been spoilt with the food in Vietnam so far, just like the rest of Asia.
It was an early start the following morning for our bus ready to move down to our next stop of Hoi An. After arriving early afternoon we dumped our bags in the hotel (which was lovely, it even has a swimming pool, all for 4 pound a night!!) we wandered around the cute Vietnamese streets. The biggest shock whilst walking around was finding a glass of beer for 9p!!!!! The weather again was getting hotter and hotter as we moved down Vietnam, so we took advantage of the pool in the hotel to cool off. That evening we had been recommended a nice little cafe with cheap Vietnamese food which ended up being amazing and one of the best meals I've had. The people that owned the cafe were lovely and we all had a great meal for very little money. We then spent the night in a Hoi An night club dancing the night away and drinking the 9p beers!
The following day we spent laying on a lovely beach just outside of the town topping up our tans which have faded a fair bit since Thailand. After a skype call to Grace we had a quick nap and then headed out for food. Tonight we decided to head down to one of the riverside restauarants. The views of the river at night are beautiful, with all the restaurants along the edge lit up and different coloured lights everywhere. We managed to get a table on the second floor of the restaurant on the balcony looking out to the river. Again we all had a lovely meal and then wandered around Hoi An, looking in the shops trying not to spend any more money!!
One of the best things about the hotel we were staying in was the breakfast!! We were treated to the choice of fresh juices, fresh fruit, bread, eggs, pancakes, cake, and even a few noodle and egg dishes!! We tried to eat as much as we could to save us from buying lunch! We then spent our final day in Hoi An looking round some of the many temples, wandering the markets and looking through the shops. Hoi An is a beautiful little town and definitely one of my favourite places, definitely worth a visit!
It was time again for another night bus and this time we weren't treated to as nice bus. It wasn't very clean and the beds not as comfy, but luckily because we are so used to them both of us managed to grab some hours sleep.
Lots of Vietnamese love Meg and Amy xxxxx
