After exploring Machu Picchu all Saturday morning, we made the long trip all the way back to Cusco ... with some Peruvian delays we reached our hotel in Cusco around 7ish. Despite being completed exhausted and sore, we had the genius idea to go out and dance and celebrate our successful completion of the trek and, Ineke's birthday! Cusco is just one big party, no matter the day so it was of course a fantastically fun and salsa filled night. It did however contribute to a somewhat slower day on Monday, our last day in Cusco. In the afternoon we decided to take a Quad bike tour through the countryside just outside of Cusco city. Best hangover cure ever - and, stunning. Although, I'm really not sure how I, of all people, ended up with the only semi-automatic (as oppose to automatic) bike, got used to the gears after a bit though and was cranking through my 'Big Bear 4x4' bike with my helmet that was three sizes too big and having signed a somewhat ominious, but expected, wavier in no time (Peruvian time so really took us about an hour to get set up and going)! Peru really is gorgeous, especially up here in the Andes. We had a two and a half hour tour through farmland that kind of reminded me a lot of back home, very lush and green undulating hills. Although - considerably more mountains and ridiculously higher - altitude around 3,500m.
To celebrate our last night in Cusco we went out to one of the fancy restaurants and had a super nice meal and then went to a pub and I watched my first rugby world cup games! Terrible Kiwi I know, and to make it worse - it was an Auz and a South Africa game I watched. Quite cool to be sat in a South American club watching Rugby at home in Wellington though with Peruvians who don't entirely understand - made me a little homesick but mainly - just awesome =)
Tomorrow early morning departure to Puno, will be sad to leave Cusco as I really have not explored any of it and would love to do more, there is so much to do.
