After an 8 hour drive to Nairobi we dropped most of the group off at a hotel in the city centre and said our goodbyes. We were camping in a suburb outside the city for the night before flying out ($2 instead of $150!) the next afternoon. The centre of town was pretty hectic, with the outskirts really bad roads and resembling the traffic in Dar, but the Karen suburb where our campsite was was clearly upmarket with nice houses and lots of greenery, so we really couldnt tell that we were in Nairobi.
We made the most of our morning in Nairobi by sharing a taxi with Amy and James to the Giraffe Sanctuary and Elephant Orphange. The giraffe sanctuary aims to conserve the endangered Rothschild species. They have 14 giraffes living in the grounds off a really impressive manor!? There is a feeding platform which allows you to be at head height with the giraffes to feed, hug and even kiss them if you like! A really good interactive experience!
We next went to the Elephant Orphanage, which only opens for an hour a day to the public, as they aim to release all the animals back into the wild eventually so discourage too much human contact. The elephants were all under 3 and really cute! They were fed milk out of giant baby bottles and the older ones held the bottles themselves with their trunk! Very funny to watch them playing in the water and mud, and trying to stand up when they fell over! We also got to touch a couple, which apart from being very muddy were odd to feel - very solid but with loose skin!
We arrived back at the campsite just in time for lunch before heading to the airport, which all went smoothly, sleeping in Dubai for a while before connecting to our onward flight to Bangkok.
