Our ship docked in Regensburg about 10 minutes walk from the city centre. We had a walking tour towards the Stonebridge which is located next to the oldest bratwurst (sausage) kitchen in Germany (it dates back to the year 1135). The Stonebridge rests on 16 arches and is one of Europes earliest surviving bridges. There is also the Porta Praetoria which is a 2nd century Roman gateway whose remains have been incorporated into a later structure.
Unlike most German cities, Regensburg was spared from destruction from bombing during WWII. This means the town has a variety of buildings spanning every European style of architecture styles. The old town has narrow winding cobbled streets with squares dotted around the town. There are also a number of towers owned by wealthy citizens - the wealthier the person, the taller the tower.
As usual, there is an impressive Gothic cathedral which we visited. Regensburg was once home to Oskar Schindler (known from the fairly recent move "Schindler's List", and also the current pope - Pope Benedict XVI came from Regensburg.
Regensburg today houses the BMW factory and a university - these being the largest employers of this city. Those who did not do the city tour chose to visit the Audi museum which was an hour or so drive from Regensburg as they said it was very good too. Personally, walking around a car museum does not particularly thrill me.
Later that afternoon we had a guided bike ride to Walhalla - approximately 20km round trip. Walhalla was built in the mid 1800's and is modelled on the Parthenon in Athens. It is perched high on a hill overlooking the Danube and it is a type of Hall of Fame for the German Nation - housing busts of philosophers and famous people such as Einstein, Ptolomy, Beethoven, Plato, Aristotle, Bach etc. I, however, did not see the interior because there were 350 odd steps to climb (and no handrail) so I decided to sit it out on the bench at the bottom. I was not alone. Brad went though and I was able to see the photos.
That evening, back on board, we sailed to Passau.
