On our second day in Siam Reap we travelled about half an hour out of town to Tonle Sap which is the home of a floating village where 1000`s of people live.
Travelling through the countryside is is obvious just howguess that ior these people are. The houses beside the road look as if they would blow over in a puff of wind. We boarded a boat for the trip up to the Tonle Sap which is a huge lake in their north of Cambodia. As this is the end of the dry season, the channel leading to the lake is quite narrow and shallow so many of the other boats passed by very closely and probably the trip was slower than when the water levels are higher. Our "entertainment" on our journey was in the form of an 11 year old Cambodian boy who looked about 8 but had personality plus. He started massaging the shoulders of one of our group for about 5 minutes and of course had to be paid for the service ($1 each). I'm sure he managed to extract about $20 from our group. When he got to Brad he took one look at his arms and called him a monkey. He nearly fell off the boat when Brad showed him his hairy chest.
As we approached the floating village we were confronted by other locals in boats who would pull up beside us and have a small child with a large python around there neck. If you took a picture they demanded $1. I guess that is one way of earning a living. There was also one girl that paddled out to us in a small tub which did not look very stable.
The village has shops, schools, temples and churches all floating on this lake and the families that live here are mainly fishermen who supplement their income with the tourists.
After returning to the bus we travelled to a Hindu temple that was mostly in ruins mainly as a result of the Khmer Rouge (Pol Pot) who used this place in the mid to late 1970`s.
For dinner that night we had a buffet while watching the Cambodian dancers.
Tomorrow we head to Phnom Penh. Our Cambodian guide will be accompanying us which will be quite an event for him because he has never been in a plane before.
