We arrive in Siem Reap at 9am. Very nice airport! Calm and pretty stress free. Got our visas and headed by tuk tuk into the city.
We are staying at a guesthouse called Prohm Penh. Its very nice, big room, ensuite, Air con. Good location.
So day 1, 9am - we dump our stuff and walk aroud the town. We nearly accidentally gatecrash a wedding - the party was in full swing and it was about 9.30am! We wander through the market which is very busy and sells everything from silk to live chickens. We had lunch and sampled some beer. At 37pence a go who could blame us! We then enjoyed a fish massage. 20 mins or so of hundreds of little fish giving us a pedicure!!
At 5pm we were picked up by Sinat our tuk tuk driver and went to the temples. We bought a 3 day pass and were dropped off. A 20 min walk/trek later up quite a steep incline we reached the base of Ta Prohm Kel temple. All we had to do now was climb to the top. A quite scary task. Think spiderman style. At the top we chilled, took in the views and watched the sun set. Getting down was just as difficult/fun and next on our itinary was food!
Ryans choice: A khmer BBQ. Which resulted in us cooking our own food including crocodile, chicken, beef, squid and snake! An on table contraption filled with paraffin provided the heat and it was all chucked on - probably breaking every hygiene rule in the book! The croc was nicer than the snake and Ryan is no longer scared of either!
A quick trip to the night market to get some sunglasses and home by 11pm. A full first day!
Day 2: 5am we meet Sinat at reception - all ready to go on a days temple touring. First stop in Angor Wat for sunrise. Got ourselves a great spot and waited with what seemed to be half of Japan for the sunrise. An awwwwwww from the Japansese signalled the sun was about to break. The pics to follow will show.We are not clever enough to find the words to describe it. Our first ever sober sunrise will not be forgotten!
After a quick coconut and tea stop we head to Bayon temple. It was before 7 when we arrived and it was so quiet. We explored and were so impressed. Words cannot do justice. The pics will show! We climbed a very steep monument to get some pics but then had to get down! Picture Ryan going backwards down a rock, hanging on and me looking scared but rather smug as he was first to do it and not me. Time to bring in a Japanese audience, who took pictures of Ryans every step and accompanied them with Ooohh, Ahhh noises until they burst into cheer when he reached the ground. Ryan now a hero in Japan continued to pose for pics and I was left thinking Shiza - me next! So in a quick think move i attempted to climb down the opposite side not to have an audience. However, they quickly realised what I was up to and legged it around to form a cheerleading party (now including Ryan!) at the base. Luckily I got down in one piece without too much embarrasement. We then explored other neighbour temples and walked back along elephant terrace to meet Sinat.
We next visited Ta Prohm which is where Tomb Raider was filmed. It was really cool. Temple ruins in a jungle with massive trees growing through the buildings. It was now getting towards midday and the heat became unberable so we headed home for a siesta!
At 3pm we returned to Angkor Wat to explore as we hadnt gone into the temple at sunrise. A quick coconut and bite to eat led us to think we'd been ripped off by a very savvy 13 yr old but it turns out we were just being dull! Angkor Wat is so impressive and after sunset we headed home. A swarm of kids around our legs trying to sell postcards, books and bracelets made it a bit more difficult to get into the tuk tuk.
The evening consisted of a more normal meal of Khmer Curry and drinks!
