Day 5
We were picked up at noon from the hotel and were headed for Phnom Penh. The jounrney was with no major mishaps only a bit of harsh braking to avoid cows. The bus DID have a toilet!! But neither of us used it as the bus aircon tuned out to be a free bottle of water! No air con, no open windows plus 37 degrees = amanda and ryan stuck to the leather bus seats. 5.5 hours quite quickly - the few episodes of Mr Bean helped pass the time but the onboards Cambodian karaoke didn't!
So we arrive in PP at 5.30 if was so different to Siem Reap. Much bigger, hotter and busier. We found a nice place to stay called the fancy guesthouse. Fancy might be going a bit far but a good find none the less.
We headed out into the city for the night. A nice meal of course led to a drink or two. In siem reap we nearly crashed a party. In Phnom penh we did! We stumbled upon a rock n roll bar and quickly realised we were in a private party. The birthday man insisted we stayed so stay we did! We were sent over some free drinks - although thankful we were wary of their contents. Ryan hatched a plan and volunteered to drink his first. If he fell off his chair I wasn't going to drink mine. After half hour he felt fine so I enjoyed the freebies too. Later Ryan did fall off his chair but don't think we can blame that one particular drink! Walking home we managed to get lost... or so we thought. It turned out that we were on the right street but the hotel had closed! Lights off and shutters down. Uh Oh! After hammering on the shutters we woke the owner who was asleep in reception with our room key in his hand. There is no hotel curfew but we did feel bad. Overall, an interesting first evening in Phnom Penh.
Day 6
We were up early - this is becoming a habit (please note - this will not contine at home). We had breakfast at a lovely bakery and Ryan won a free chocolate egg. We then headed to Choeung Ek (The Killing Fields). Its a sad place to visit but really made us understand the history of Cambodia. In the afternoon we visited the Royal Palace which was really interesting and a big change from the mornings visit. We must have left our wits at the gate as when walking around our bag, on Ryans back got raided. Luckily, there was only suncream and water in there. Lesson learnt! A busy day so we negotiated the manic traffic and walked home to get ready for the night. We visited a few bars and one lady wanted my bag. Not for the contents but because it looked pretty. We made some friends in the Magic Sponge bar which is our new local!
We will put pictures on when we get home.
Quote of the trip so far goes to Ryan: Do tonsils live in your ears? If so, mine are hurting!
Just leaving Cambodia. Ryan managed to tip a table of drinks over because a kitten jumped onto his lap and there is a mad drunk man behind us trying to ply us with beers so we gotta go. Flight calling, Bangkok here we come!
