Alyson, Emily, Julie & Katie's Adventures
We snorkelled with the biggest fish in the world!!!
On Wednesday, Katie, Em and Julie (Alyson was topping up her actually very impressive tan on the beach) went on a boat trip to swim with whale sharks. As it turned out the spotter plane, which they use to spot the whale sharks (the clue is in the name), didn't see anything that day, but we still had a cool day on the boat staying inside the reef that surrounds Coral Bay. We did get to see dolphions and snokel with turtles, reef sharks (olny small, phew!) and manta rays. The manta rays were amazing, they are ginormous and they have big mouths that they scoop plankton and little fish into as they whirl around in big arcing loops under the surface. It was really stunning to see. After a lovely day snokelling and soaking up the sun we were offered another day out for free a few days later to try to see the whale sharks. On Saturday we went out again and this time the skipper got the call that they had been spotted and we raced out of the sheltered reef area to find the whale sharks. Well, we got to swim with them and they are impressive, so large and fast (so fast that i thought i was going to drown from exhaustion trying to keep up with the group!!). Its really wierd because one minute you are looking down through your mask, frantically swimming and scanning the sea, then the next minute these massive creatures loom up out of the water heading towards you. Wicked. Unfortunately, outside the reef it was seriously choppy and being the land lover i am i was sick four times over the edge of the boat!! Not that i am complaining though, because a beautiful boy came over to talk to me "to make me feel better". And i certainly made a miraculous recovery! All in all, we were fairly glad to make it back on solid ground but a "once in a lifetime experience" it certainly was!!!
After this excitiment we were really sorry to say goodbye to Coral Bay but we had to start back to Perth. Today we have made it to Cervantes, which is the biggest town close to the Pinnacles (rock formations in the desert) and we are off shortly to have a little look.
