After sleeping in so long that we missed the hotel breakfast and after letting Philip get some work done online, it was after twelve by the time we left the hotel. Our first stop was the newer location of Orlando's Pizza. Orlando's had the best delivery pizza when we were Tech students, and they didn't disappoint us today. The service was a little slow, but the waitress was otherwise attentive and we did enjoy the pizza. It's nice to see a local business grow and thrive for so many years.
After filling up on pizza, we headed to the Buddy Holly Center to learn more about his life. The place was pretty busy. As well as seeing the Buddy Holly artifacts and memorabilia, we heard a lot of talk about last night's concert. It seemed that everyone had been there, too. The best part of the Center was the film of Buddy's life and career. It was quite well done--about 15 minutes long with lots of clips of him performing. The big statue of Buddy and the West Texas Walk of Fame is right across the street from the museum.
Next, we drove to the Tech campus. When we were students, no one was able to drive on campus without a pass, but now visitors are allowed. We found a good on-street, pay parking spot near Gordon Hall so that was were we started our tour. Gordon has been upgraded quite a bit since Philip lived there. It houses students in the Honors College now. Almost every window had the same "Sun's Up! Guns Up!" poster in the window. We saw them in other buildings, but not as many as at Gordon.
We walked over to Stangel Hall passing by the statue of Will Rogers on his horse, Soapsuds. Sure enough, he is still on that horse in the same place The legend holds. There are now a lot of sidewalks laid with red and black brick. It seems to be in a random pattern, but I don't know. I never could figure out if it said anything in the pattern. The campus is very pretty with lots of green landscaping and small park-like areas to relax.
After seeing the campus, we made it back to the hotel so Philip could finish up some emails for the end of the workday in Albuquerque. We walked to Joe's Crab Shack for dinner just a few parking lots down from the hotel.
