Today we were given a car with a driver to take us round New Delhi and see the tourist sights. The first place we went was the houses of parliment and the presidents house. We drove down the road and took pictures and just as we were leaving the road was blocked and we were made to wait as the president drove past surrounded by four black cars on his way to a meeting! Didnt see his face but managed to get a blurry picture of the cars! Right across the road from this was the Gateway to India...a large stone archway with guards underneath it. The guards were doing some strange dance routine type thing which we watched for a while before making our way back through the hundreds of people selling things to the car. Lotus Mosque was much more interesting than the first two sights, its a huge white mosque in the shape of a lotus flower surrounded by bright blue pools and pretty gardens. We went and sat on the steps for a while looking at the pools and wanting to go swimming, then chatted to some Indian school children who were very friendly and wanted hundreds of photos! On the way out a guy from Birmingham whos family lives in India chatted to usand gave us a few tips on how to survive India, then helped us find our driver whod gone walk abouts. On the way to the Mosque we'd past a mcdonalds so ask the driver to take us there for lunch and I had my first McVeggie! they should sell these in England! I accidentally ate raw lettuce, but survived and reckon its probably so full of chemicals that it wouldnt make me ill anyway. They also have palm trees in Indian mcdonalds...much better than England!!!
Humayans Tomb was next as is the best thing ive seen in India so far. It is called Delhi's Taj Mahal, but is not as big and there are far less tourists. Theres several tombs there, fruit trees, fountains and massive gardens. As you can tell it was quite a busy day and ive still got two more sights to write about! Qutub Minar was next on the list, and although interesting and beautiful...the tree that had fallen over but seemed to still be growing is what I remember most about it :s
Finally was Lodi gardens. These are apparently the most tropical gardens in India, and was very nice to walk around and see loads of colourful parrots. There was a lake with fountains and statues and lots of indian couples sat on the benches...very nice
