Matt had no problem adjusting to the time change, I, on the other hand didn't sleep a wink! We've both decided that Matt has been living his whole life on London time, which fully explains why he is usually up all night and sleepy all day. Once we got here, he was on a perfect schedule! He was bright and cheerful by 6am!! While I was feeling pretty sleepy we decided to get off to an early start and make use of our bonus time. After a quick breakfast we grabbed the 'tube' to Westminster station. Leaving that station is a picture that I will have in my memory forever. We walked up the steps to see 'Big Ben' and the Parliament buildings right in front of us. Matt was completely awe struck. After he picked his jaw off the floor, he was snapping pictures like crazy. Once he had finally got over the scale and beauty of the parliament buildings we turned the corner to see Westminster Abbey. Again, Matt was speechless. We wandered around taking it all in until the Abbey opened. Matt was pretty impressed with the tour of the Abbey and is still convinced that anything we see or do on the rest of this trip will be hard pressed to surpass it. I absolutely loved looking at his face all day, just in total shock at the impressive history and architecture of the building.
After our tour of Westminster Abbey we decided to check out London's other 'humble place of worship' ….St. Paul's Cathedral. Again, we were both speechless at how beautiful the building was, with it's impressively painted domed ceiling and ornate décor. We decided to take the 257 step stairway to the top of the dome to the outdoor observation decks on top. I remember doing the trek 10 years ago when I visited London with Therese, and remember that it was the first time I discovered I was afraid of heights. Even though I remember the overwhelming fear that I had the last time, I knew that Matt needed to see the view up top, so up we went. The first 100 steps were fine, but nearer to the top of the dome the stairs become a steep wrought iron spiral staircase, where if you look down you can see just how high up you are. This was where the queaziness set in last time, and returned again this time. I was desperately grabbing onto the railings, turning green in the face and had a full body sweat. Luckily Matt was there behind me to steady me, because I probably could have fainted if I was on my own. Once we reached the top, it was all worth it. The views were spectacular! Our terrific day of sightseeing in London was topped off by getting to see Morrissey in concert! The show was spectacular! He performed a lot of our favorite tunes, and his band was amazing. What an awesome day, it will be pretty hard to top!
P.S. Just wanted to let you know that we posted two blogs at once because we have just found a McDonald's with free wireless. This site may not automatically show past blogs, so just search around to see past blogs to see any that you may have missed. Cheers!
