Well, we survived our flight to London! As planned, I filled Matthew with Gravol in hopes of knocking him out. Unfortunately, this did nothing…..we were both wide awake for almost the entire 10 hour flight! Since our flight was mostly in daylight, apart from about an hour or two over the Atlantic, we some some incredible sights! We flew over northern Canada….what an expanse of marshy landscape speckled by lakes. Flying over Greenland was a highlight, seeing the huge polar icecap sweep down across the land. Where the ice met the land there was the most beautiful shade of turquoise. It was also pretty impressive to see the thawing northern sea, with ice chunks drifting through the water.
By the end of the flight, we were both desperate to get off the plane. I felt like Elaine on that episode of Seinfeld where she's stuck on the subway, internally screaming to myself "Get me off of here!". Of course when we arrived, we quickly had to adjust to the time difference, it was 8am, yet neither of us had slept a wink. Like zombies we got ourselves on the proper trains into the city and impressively found our hotel without a problem. Both of us wanted to climb into bed for a short snooze, but unfortunately our hotel wouldn't let us check in till 2pm …. 6 hour wait! We wondered around in a daze and ended up finding that we were right near Hyde park. What a lovely place to end up, even though we were in quite a state! Our attention was drawn to these great fold out beach chairs that were spread out all along the grass in front of the lake and thought it would be a great place to stop and catch our bearings. We hadn't sat there for 5 minutes until a man approached us, collecting money for using the chairs. We were both so stunned that we quickly handing over the 2 pounds he wanted and told him we would be leaving. Unfortunately as we walked further we saw a sign that said it was 2 pounds for a 4 hour sit…we'd been had! We strolled the park for a few hours then made our way back to the hotel. We both fell into a deep sleep, woke for dinner then tried to sleep some more. Jet lag is a b****.
