Wow, where do i start..... The Gibbon Experience has been by far the best trip of my travelling so far. So different from anthing ive ever done in my life before. We set off on a 3 hour drive upto the bokeo region and once we arrived there had a 1 half hrs trek into the jungle (most of it all up hill aswell!) but once we eventually got upto the first tree house we were greeted by a 4 month old baby bear! Her mother had been poached so the locals who are part of the gibbon experience took her in and look after her. I just couldnt believe how tame and playful she was, honestly it was like playing with a little cheeky puppy! An English lad (a very fit english lad at that!) showed us how to use our zip line equiptment and then you were free to go anywhere you wanted along the ziplines in the jungle. It was mad because you were that high up (400ft) and just left to your own devices, no guides or anything to check you were strapped on right. There were 5 tree houses in total (each one a few miles apart) so it was good fun getting from one to the other. Although on the 2nd day we all went to the 5th tree house which was the furthest away, and oh my god that walk nearly killed me! The wasnt many ziplines towards that one so in between you had to walk. I didnt know what was worst, the steep hills or the leaches!! Because i had walking sandels on the leaches kept sucking on to my feet (mum you would have died, just like little worms!) You had to pull them off really quickly or else they would just keep sucking onto you and make you bleed!! The was nearly a few tears i tell thi!
Me Carlie, Rach and a New Zealand bloke were all stopping in tree house 3. This one was more or less open plan so had 360 degree views of all the jungle at about 300ft up.... amazing!! It was mad taking a shower looking out onto it all. Infact the views looked like something off gorrillas in the mist. The Tree houses were just fantastic, we had a kitchen n everything. The only downside to them were the spiders!! OH MY GOD THEY WERE F**KING MASSIVE!! Were all terrified of them but sort of prepared ourselves before we went cos we knew that there were going to be loads but nothing could have prepared us for those beasts! We were fine through the day but once it started getting dark they came crawling out!
The first night we were all sat round the lantern chatting and out of the corner of my eye i saw what i though was a mouse or somat, well that was it then, me carlie n rach were all huddled together nearly crying whilst poor tane (the newzealander) went to try n kill it. As soon as her went near it, the spider/beast just did a massive jump into tree near by. So not only were they the biggest things ive ever seen but they could also jump/fly..... no sleep for me that night! Even though we had mozzy nets, it was still terrified. The others spiders, tane wouldnt even go near!
The locals brought us all our food upto our treehouses bless them. Rice n Veg for breakfast, dinner and tea, was nice though. They woke us up about 6ish so we could either go on an early morning walk to try and see the gibbons or just fly about on the lines all day, which we chose to do (after all the walks nearly killed me!!) Each zipline was so high up and even though we'd done them loads of times in was still terrifying stepping off the platforms into thin air! You picked up quite alot of speed as you went along them so it was good fun!
The whole purpose of the Gibbon Experience is to protect the wildlife in the jungle. Its only being going 2 years and the french guy who set it up doesnt want it to get too commercialised so the only way you can find out about it is by word of mouth. Its not in the lonely planet or advertised anywhere. The more tree houses he builds the more jungle he is covering so the poaches cannot enter that area. Im so glad we got to do it (only by chance cos 3 people had dropped out the day before) Although its not advertised word gets around how good it is so its still booked up for weeks on end.
It really has just been fantastic, if you ever go to Laos you've got to go experience it and them just having the little bear there topped it off for us, especially when i got to bottle feed it aswel, so cute, i want one!!
Ive uploaded a few photos from the trip so have a look! xxxxxxxxxÂ
