After a good nights kip, had breakfast with a nice American couple and went off to explore Port Cochin. Walked around for a couple of hours up to the harbour where we saw the remains of the old Fort, the
Chinese Fishing Nets and spent half an hour looking for a place that didn't exist anymore. While looking gormless for a while, we met an auto-rickshaw driver called Magic Johnson (yeah, I think he made that first part up too, but his wife Shaq and son Kobe sounded lovely). He pointed out our error, proceeded to drive us around the port and acted as our guide for a couple hours. He was Mag... great, he was great. Saw the spice market, synagogue, Muslim town, Churches, museums etc had some food and had a piece of cake the size of my flight-abused ankles in a cafe. Then back to Beena's for some more home cooked food and bed early-ish in preparation for our train journey to Varkala in the morning...

Sheila I love your commentary Rich - makes me laugh! Sounds as if you're experiencing the culture. x
Christine We had a guide in Cochin called Johnson, wonder if they're all called Johnson or could it be a weird coincidence and you got the same guide. Sounds like you're having a great time and what a great way for everyone to keep up wih your travels. Have fun.
Alex Christine-I think Johnson may have been the same guy then, he seemed to be well known amongst the locals and the tourists. He was such a great guide,he was known as Johnson with the "Ferrari" his rickshaw was labelled with A ferrari sticker and he insisted he had all the mod cons including....free air con. Alex x
Christine I'll have to dig my photos out and see if it is him. I've got a terrible memory and can only remember him being small, which most Indian men are! I love the whole blog idea, not only for everyone else but for you to remember what you did and when! I loved Kerala and especially our stay on the boat on the backwater, and of course the lovely food. We didn't once get the dreaded belly but we did take advice from a local and drunk plenty of fresh pineapple juice, which is meant to help keep it at bay. We're not sure if it was that but didn't dare take the chance and stop drinking it. Have you got used to the head wobble they all seem to have, I could never imitate them much as I tried. Still lots more for you both to see and do - lucky you. x
