We decided yesterday to do a mountain Walk today. unsurprisingly for us!
When we were choosing our accommodation here we chose a pension that offered a discount card for using the chair lifts and post buses; so when Colin suggested we might've walked up for 4 hours I refused, so we came up on the bubble. We were going to go up on the new cabin but this morning there was an Austrian hike accompanied by musicians; so when we got to the lift it was jam packed full of octogenarians kitted out in leather hiking boots, complete with poles and huge rucksacks and the queue was as bad as in winter! However I spotted some other tourists (like us, dressed in shorts, t-shirts and inappropriate shoes) being let through on to the bubble so we followed them and the man said we could go on the bubble and then it would be a 10 min walk up to the main station so that's what we did. At the top station we could hear the musicians playing as people arrived either from the bubble or off the cable car.
We decided not to walk up to the top as the walk we wanted came past where we were anyway, so off we set
For our 2 1/2 hour walk back down to resort, 8 hours later we arrived in resort! We of course deviated from our plan and our walk turned in to more of a restaurant crawl as we came across huts and restaurants galore! We even stopped for a bit of a sunbathe next to a reservoir. Considering the amount of people going up on the bubble and cable once again we managed to go to places on the mountains where not many others were walking!
As we walked through the trees, up above us started circling par-ascenders until there must been well over 50 above us; it was amazing. Colin then remembered that not only was it the musical hiking today but also a par-ascenders competition: which explained the number above us.
We continued on our walk and came across men dressed in laderhausen and a man with a parakeet on his shoulder!
The funniest thing about our walk was all the way signs. For ages every one we came to said Zell am See 1 hr 50 mins then we came to a spate of them saying 20 mins, until the final ones all said 10 mins- wacky!
We had a lovely evening people watching. We watched a group of 20 Pakistani people trying to get tables at the restaurant across from us, they didn't seem to grasp that 2 tables of 4 wouldn't accommodate them all and for quite irate with the waitresses who simply ignored them.
Tomorrow we are going to rise the high alpine road with 36 hairpin bends- oh goody I can't wait!
