Yesterday I arrived in Kyoto the old capital city before Tokyo. Was really busy straight away because the hotel was much bigger so lots of people to tag onto. First was a Korean grill, eat and drink all you can in 90 mins. Had octopus and heart amongst loads of other meats, ice cream and potato salad. In that order. We grilled it at the table in front of us as Tom demonstrates.

Today, a week since I got here, 4 of us set out on our own cycle tour as led by Tom, we were reduced to 3 after half an hour's cycling due to a puncture from the tyre being old! We saw a gold temple, bamboo forest and had sushi on the stereotypical conveyer belt table thing. I can add fish eggs to the dislikes list, but they came with cucumber so I was happy.

• Got lucky traditional lucky bag of clothes for 15 quid with nice scarf, blue cardigan and comfy wrinkle free shirt. So I can afford to pretend the denim jacket wasn't in there :s ...
