Yogyakarta
Eleven hours on the night train and we arrived in Yogyakarta or as the locals call it Yogja. It was a small city, much quieter and with a totally different feel to Jakarta. Beechuk (a guy on a bike with bench attached to the front), and horse and cart were as much on the road as cars and bikes.
By this time we had developed a obsession for Indonesian specialty which looks like a pasty with different fillings, or how Ari likes to call it "Mama's Pite" which reminded her of home.
Our first day in Yogja, we got up early to explore. Yogya's pride was the sultan palace. Now this sounds like it might be full of jewels and grand but in reality it was no more than a gazebo. We decided on doing something more interesting and jumping on a beechuk and exploring the city. We felt sorry for the driver though cos as soon as there was a slight incline, he would have to get off and push us! So we got off at a traditional art shop with ladies making batik paintings.
All the friendly locals we met so far talked about Borobudur, the biggest Buddhist temple in Asia and asked if we had visited, so we made sure we went the next day.
At Yogja bus station there seemed to be a lot of guys asleep or chilling on the steps with their mates and playing their guitars. I almost got run over as the bus swerved into the bus stop which amused the locals......two hrs later we where at the temple. It was a huge crumbling temple with 100's of Buddha images. There was also an amazing view from the top.
That evening we explored the shops and experienced one of many power cuts the city gets. A whole shopping center was pitch black and out of know where a street band with drums starts playing!
