Hi everybody. We're a bit late writing this, but welcome to our Prague blog.
We set off from Vienna early on Wednesday morning, and after a bit of a jog from the underground to the train station, we made our train with about 4 minutes to spare. We arrived in Prague early in the afternoon, and found the hostel easily enough. It's about 2 miles from the town centre, but the trams run so often that we could be there in 5 minutes. The hostel itself was very nice, with spacious 8 bed rooms, and comfy beds. It had a good kitchen and a brilliant cellar bar that had cheap beer on tap (1 pound a pint), loads of seats to chat to other travellers, and an array of board games (Amy is winning 2-0 at Scrabble, but that's only because I'm unlucky when picking new lettters!)
Later in the afternoon we went to the supermarket along the road to stock up on supplies for the week. Then went home and cooked chicken dijonnaise with rice for tea, before heading in to town to watch the Liverpool vs Real Madrid game in one of the many Irish pubs. Liverpool won 1-0 away, which was good enough to keep me happy for the day. Afterwards we headed back to the hostel and had a few drinks in the bar. We got chatting to a few Canadian guys and before we knew it it was far too late, and time for bed.
The next day we woke up just before midday, with Amy a little worse for wear and insisting that we go to McDonalds. Afterwards we went into the old town and had a quick wander around the main square. We got there just in time to see the famous astronomical clock go off. About a thousand people must have been stood looking up at it, but it's a bit of an anticlimax in the end. Still it is hundreds of years old!
In the evening we decided to chill out in the hostel. Amy played DS and I read some crappy book that I picked up downstairs in the book swap. It was super cheesy and like reading a series of 24 from TV. Still it was pretty entertaining. Later on we went to a cheap place next door to the hostel for some pizza, then back to the hostel bar to play a bit of poker. A couple of the Canadians joined in later on, but no one could afford to play for cash so it was just a bit of fun.
The next morning we paid about 3 pounds for the all you can eat breakfast in the hostel. It was pretty impressive and you could even make your own pankcakes, but I'm never that hungry first thing so I didn't really get my moneys worth. Aterwards we headed to Prague zoo, our second zoo of the trip. We got there at about 10am and paid around 4 pounds to get in. The place was huge and far better than the one we went to in Belgrade (which we were impressed with at the time). We stayed there until it shut at 4pm and still couldn't fit everything in. At one point we were even walking through a dark enclosure when bats started flying all around our heads as it was an open enclosure. Amy wasn't too keen on the idea, but I thought it was great.
When we got back to the hostel we had a cheap pasta meal with a bottle of wine and decided to go out with the Canadians and a group of Americans. They had found an organised bar crawl, which we weren't to keen on, but as everyone was going we tagged along. It turned out we were right as the drinks were similar prices to England, and nearly 3x what you would normally pay in Prague. Still we hung aroung for a while then headed back and got an early(ish) night.
The next morning we decided to get up and do some hardcore sight seening. We headed in to the old town and took in all the sights including the main square and Wenceslas square. We had some lunch then I dragged Amy back to the Irish bar to watch the Liverpool vs Middlesbrough game. We lost 2-0 and I wished we had never watched it. On the way home we walked over Charles bridge then caught the tram.
Back at the hostel we cooked thai green curry, then Amy managed to crush her hand under her locker. Just a bit of bruising though. We went town to the bar at night and had a couple of drinks over a game of scrabble.
On our last day in Prague we went to the botanical gardens as we had heard they were quite nice. We got there and weren't really that impressed. To be fair I think it would be very nice in the summer, but at this time of year it's just a few big open spaces for nice walks. There weren't really any lush flowery gardens.
We paid to 4 pounds to get into the indoor gardens, which were nice enough, but we were out of there 20 minutes later wondering exactly what the admission was for. We had a walk though the park on the way back to town, then got a tram up to Prague castle, which was very nice. Afterwards we had a wander down from the castle towards town, back over Charles bridge, then back to the hostel on the tram.
We cooked a spag bol for tea then got chatting to a few scousers that were here on a trip with college. They only looked about 16 and most of them couldn't get served in the bar downstairs, but that didn't stop them chancing it. We laughed when we heard there teacher having a go at them. We met a couple of English girls who were nice enough and played scrabble with them over a couple of drinks before an early night. Berlin the next day.....
