We left Zagreb on Tuesday, and after a six and a half hour journey arrived in Budapest. We got the underground to our hostel, and headed out for tea. We found a nice but cheap restaureant, which was also showing the Chelsea game which was a bonus. Headed back to hostel, watched a film and got an early night.
I woke up grumpy due to lack of sleep as it was quite noisy in the hostel. I was also annoyed when a Hungarian guy ran past me in his pants to beat me into the shower. Anyway, we headed out to the park/castle area and bought some pretzels for breakfast, which turned out to be rubbish so we fed them to the ducks. We then checked out the castle and went to the Agricultural Museum. It was a very serious museum, you don't want to mess around in there or you'll get told off. It was quite interesting though , and it was nice and warm.
After the museum we had a walk around Pest. Highlights included the world's largest hourglass (they turn it over once a year), the steam baths and the main bridge over the Buda. We got some food and headed back to the hostel. We have decided to cook in more from now on to save a bit of cash, so we had a dinner of pasta (again) and some Hungarian wine.
We got chatting to some Spaniards in the hostel. They offered us some of their 75% rum. It was awful, so we decided to stick to wine. We went out with some English lads from the hostel and took in a few bars before heading back. It was a good night, everyone in the hostel was very friendly. It was a late one.
We woke up rather late the next day and I decided I didn't feel up to doing much that day. We basically hung out in the hostel and watched films. We went out once for cheeseburgers and to buy water. We have a problem whenever we buy the stuff as we never know which is fizzy and which is still. We have been stuck with fizzy a few times which is annoying, as it tastes horrible. Later that evening Alan helped the lady in the hostel fix the computers, which had all broken for some reason. To thank him she offered us an upgrade, and that night we had a massive apartment to ourselves for free! (Check out the video).
On Friday we got up early to see the rest of the city before we left later that day to Bratislava. We took in the National Museum, which again was good but I think we are suffering from museum overload at the moment. I don't want to go to another one for a while unless it looks really amazing, with dinosaurs or something. Anyway, after that we walked over to Buda which seems to be the posher, more historical part of the city. We walked around the castle, and had lunch in a cafe. Later we walked up to the Citadel which is on a big hill overlooking the city. It was quite a trek, and snowing too, but we made it in the end and took in some great views before heading back to the hostel for a bit until it was time for our train. It was only a two and a half hour journey to Bratislava.
We got to Bratislave late last night and missed the last tram. We had to walk to our hostel, but we found it eventually with the help of two Japanese guys who were also lost, but had a map. Again, Alan's geography skills proved invaluable. We'll write again in a few days after we've checked out the city, which seems quite small.
Take care, Amy and Alan xx
