It turns out no matter what country you're in, post offices are still confusing! On walking into a local Thai post office, amid the confusion of queues and tickets and boxes, like most places in Thailand, someone knew what we wanted without us saying anything and came to help us out! So, after packaging off 3kg of Jades unnecessary clothes from her bag back to England and a leisurely breakfast, we took a boat from Krabi over to Koh Phi Phi.
We got off the boat and knowing its only a small island we set off walking to the hostel (Kinnaree House). On arriving we realised we didn't even have enough money on us to pay the hostel so had to take a quick detour to an ATM. This sorted, a woman then walked us another few minutes round the corner to another house which was where we are staying. Overall impressions of this place in the words of Sally and Ruth are it's 'alright'. The rooms are full of the local residents - beetles and mozzies! Ruth and Jade have taken the worst of the insect bites with me and Sally remaining unscathed so far. Also we have some more stinking bathrooms and toilets - to the point where you can't stand to brush your teeth in the bathroom and have to stand outside the door.
For our first night in Phi Phi we went out to eat, went to a bar and then hit the beach for a party for some fire shows and beach dancing! Once again though it was pouring with rain! The next morning Jade woke up trying to tell us she must have banged her head the night before as it really hurt and she woke up really dehydrated in the night - but it definitely had nothing to do with the beers and buckets (of alcohol) she consumed(!)
Phi Phi seems to have an equal cat to human ratio, they are everywhere! But as Ruth suggested, at least they are keeping the mice/rats away!
The island is only small and very touristy but is so beautiful. We took a morning walk around because it was raining again and did some shopping. We went to look for some denim shorts for me and had to try on some extra large ones as everyone is so tiny here! I asked for some bigger ones but the woman kept insisting I go for smaller so had to keep squeezing into child-size shorts. Therefore, we left that shop at the first opportunity and went down to the beach instead.
The beaches here are lovely with white sand and shallow light blue sea, but it did keep raining yesterday!
That evening we intended to take a taxi up to the viewpoint on the island. Instead of this though, we ended up on the walking route which took about half an hour up a lot of stairs and steep paths. It was a really nice view at the top, although, we all had a bit of a sweat on! Then, the sunset wasn't too impressive because it was quite cloudy!
We took a walk back down in the dark which was a little hairy, so we went for tea and booked a boat trip around the island for tomorrow. The sales lady was very charming and took a shine to Jade, so much that we had to book with her so we will see what happens tomorrow!
