Hello from Hahndorf, a German town on the outskirts of Adelaide.
We leave Hawker and head for the southern Flinders ranges unsure of our final destination. The views are stunning. Flat plains on one side and mountain ranges on the other. We are now driving through lots of farm land, hundreds of fields covered with yellow canola crops, green fields of wheat and barley. The beautiful scenery made all the better by the glorious sunny weather. There are lots of stone cottage ruins. We drive through some cute scenic wee towns. First stop is Quorn for coffee and then onto Wilmington and Laura.
Mark is keen to have lunch at the Spalding Hotel as we have read good things about it. We plan our drive to get there at lunchtime. When we get there it is quiet and they advise no food in today. So we hop back in the car and push on as by this stage we are pretty hungry.
We drive to Clare and both kids fall asleep. We are not sure whether to wake them as we are starving. We wait until they wake. Mark spots a cute cafe called Wild Saffron where we have lunch. This is a great find. I have the regional special which is a baguette with local free range chicken, avocado and pesto and Mark has the pulled pork sandwich. Delicious. There is very little accommodation available here so we decide to drive onto Hahndorf.
The road becomes windy and there are lots of hills. We drive through the Main Street of Hahndorf when we arrive. It is beautiful, there are parks, lots of old stone buildings and it is clean. The German influence is unmistakable.
We spend a couple of nights at The Manna of Hahndorf. It is some of the best accommodation we have stayed in and is the centre of town. Our trusty wee car gets some well earned rest!
Hahndorf is like a postcard. The streets are lined with beautiful trees and old stone buildings. The parks and playgrounds are pristine. The shops all play German music. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to food and shopping. This place is busy and deservedly so. We don't want to leave but cannot stay here forever!
Australia is experiencing some warmer than normal weather at the moment and the days are around 30 degrees and very warm. We spend our time in Hahndorf taking the kids to parks, shopping, eating and drinking! Mark is in his element, he has pork knuckle and pork ribs accompanied by copious steins of German beer. Emily attacks the giant pretzel. I cannot go past waffles. Yummo!
We love this town and walk up and down the Main Street many times. Emily is a real trooper and never complains about having to walk. In fact it's what she prefers but it does make the going slow.
We have breakfast at Udder Delights where we enjoy great coffee, savoury muffins, home made crumpets, banana bread and muesli. This place is mostly about cheese and we love looking at the produce and gadgets they sell.
