We are almost at the end of this epic journey. The last thing we want to do before heading south east is to explore the Flinders Ranges. We have heard they are quite spectacular. We leave Port Augusta and drive towards Quorn. It's a beautiful day. The roads are long and straight. We reach Quorn, a cute wee colonial town and grab a coffee before continuing our journey.
It is pretty busy in this area due to school holidays. We decide to stay in Hawker and after finding accommodation head for Paranchilna. We drive in some flat plains for 90 km with the ranges running parallel to us. The scenery is spectacular, there are abandoned stone cottages, the ranges have lots of peaks and we love the drive.
It is well and truly lunchtime when we come across the Prairie Hotel which is an old pub that has been beautifully restored and turned into a foodie destination. It is famous in this area for its "feral food" menu. It is busy but we decide to stop and manage to score a table. We love the feel of this pub. Mark has a camel burger and I have an emu burger. They are both good but the emu just beats the camel! Another highlight is the wild berry and rosella flower ice cream - refreshing and a must if you visit!
The following day we head to Wilpena Pound and do the Hills Homestead walk. It is 6.6 km and the walk takes you along the creek in the pound and past massive monster red gums, some reputed to be 500 years old. William has no issues and is chuffed when he spots a shingle back lizard! Emily rests on Marks back!
Back to Hawker for lunch. We check out the local quilt and craft market. They mainly display/sell quilts but there are also knitted everything (dolls, clothes, hats etc...), jams, lollies and home made biscuits. We purchase some wattle seed melting moments and ginger nuts which are delicious. If we lived in this area I could see myself becoming a biscuit eater!
We love this area but also feel ready to head home and are still undecided where to head tomorrow.
